Charleston church shooter Dylann Storm Roof’s resemblance to Macaulay Culkin had caused the actor’s name to trend on Twitter. Many users noted on the social media site how Roof, who has been arrested for shooting dead nine people at the Emanuel AME Church, looks a lot like Culkin. For the most part, Twitter users simply pointed out how similar they look, without diminishing the tragedy. There were some, however, who joked about it, while others expressed how even drawing a comparison was wrong.

A Twitter user named Tam X. simply noted, “He looks like Macaulay Culkin,” while FKA Tay wrote, “I saw Macaulay Culkin trending and was confused. Turns out everyone thinks the Charleston murderer looks like him.” A user named thought there was definitely a resemblance, tweeting, “The Charleston shooter looks a little bit like Macaulay Culkin.. No?” And CalQuin asked, “What in the Macaulay Culkin hell?”

While voicing frustration that Roof hadn’t been caught at the time (he’s since been arrested), Twitter user Victionary jokingly tweeted, “F”cking Macaulay Culkin has shot up a church and they cant find him? Nope. This is bullsh*t.” Similarly, a guy who goes by handle Just Me cracked, “Macaulay Culkin has not been right since the Home Alone movies ended.” “So basically Macaulay Culkin did it?” added a Twitter used named Trans-Rachel.

Meanwhile, a woman named Rebecca found the whole comparison offensive. She tweeted, “Oh, so now we’re making it into a joke about Macaulay Culkin? Okay, society. This is beyond upsetting.”

Gossip Cop certainly understands how these things work on Twitter, but we’d like to suggest that instead of focusing on Roof’s resemblance to Macaulay Culkin, we remember the faces of those who, for no reason at all, were taken from their lived ones.
