Sam Shepard, the Oscar-nominated actor and acclaimed playwright, has died of complications from ALS. He was 73. Celebrities are now reacting on Twitter to his death. See Hollywood stars’ tweets and tributes below.

Shepard died Thursday at his Kentucky home surrounded by loved ones, his family announced Monday. The actor was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in 1983’s The Right Stuff and won a Pulitzer Prize for his play Buried Child in 1979. Other notable films on Shepard’s acting resume include Days of Heaven, Steel Magnolias, Black Hawk Down, The Notebook and August: Osage County. He most recently appeared on the Netflix series “Bloodline.”

One celebrity reacting on social media to Shepard’s death is Alyssa Milano, who tweeted, “Rest with the angels, Sam Shepard. My condolences to all that loved him.” Patton Oswalt said, “Oh MAN. #RIPSamShepard.” Ron Perlman exclaimed, “God no!” Don Cheadle wrote, “Damn …” And John Fugelsang offered, “I love Jack Nicholson but Sam Shepard deserved that Oscar for ‘The Right Stuff’ and I’d shout it while bouncing on Jack’s sofa.”

Meanwhile, Jason Alexander noted, “A great man of the theater has passed. Thank you, Sam Shepard. RIP.” “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau expressed, “A hero of theatre. A hero of writing. A hero of acting. A hero of mine. Sam Shepard RIP.” And Michael Chiklis said, “First became a Sam Shepard fan as a playwright when I was in ‘Buried Child.’ Tremendously talented actor as well. Gone too soon. RIP.”

Rainn Wilson conveyed, “R.I.P. Sam Shepard – cowboy poet dramatist of the American family shadow. A legend.” Ethan Embry said, “Earlier this year I worked on Sam Shepard’s ‘True West.’ His words and characters gave an actor countless gifts to play with. He was a master.” George Takei offered, “Sam Shepard was a towering figure in American theater and film. He indeed had ‘the right stuff.’ His voice will truly be missed.”

Antonio Banderas mourned, “Sam Shepard thank you for enlighten us at 24 frames per second. RIP.” Piper Perabo expressed, “Heartbroken to loose our great American playwright, Sam Shepard a real cowboy heart, a real artist.” And Marc Maron tweeted, “RIP Sam Shepard. Ride on, genius.” Rob Lowe said, “Goodbye to Sam Shepard, a true American icon of letters.” And Jeff Daniels wrote, “Sam Shepherd. A playwright’s playwright. R.I.P.”

David Alan Grier added, “Rest n Peace Sam Shepard. A theatrical n literary giant who’s artistic voice will be missed n this troubled world.” Ashley Greene, who worked with the late actor in the drama In Dubious Battle, said, “The world lost a great talent today. I feel honored to have called him a costar. RIP Sam Shepard.” And Shot in the Heart co-star Paul Wesley wrote, “I had the honor of playing Sam Shepard’s son in one of my first films. He was a class act whose work profoundly influenced me & the world.”

Michael McKean said, “There’s a restaurant in the East Village we refer to as the Sam Shepard restaurant because we saw him there once. This will continue.” Josh Groban offered, “Sam Shepard. What a titan of a human and artist.” Reese Witherspoon expressed, “So sad to hear about Sam Shepard passing. A truly original actor and an incredible writer. Sending love to his family. #RIP.” And Olivia Munn tweeted, “Rest in love.”

Sarah Hyland noted, “Fool for Love has been one of my favorite plays for over a decade. RIP #SamShepard You will be severely missed.” Tony Goldwyn said, “#SamShepard you left us too young. What a loss. RIP.” The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks added, “We’ve lost an icon. R.I.P. Sam Shepard.” And Kirstie Alley expressed, “Sam Shepard .. you sure wrote some amazing unforgettable stories RIP.”

Edward Norton said, “Wearing my cowboy boots and raising a glass tonight in honor of the great Sam Shepard.” Mark Ruffalo wrote, “Rest In Peace Sam Shepard.” Meanwhile, Sophia Bush said the actor “will be deeply missed” and Katie Couric stated “RIP Sam Shepard” along with a screenshot of the actor’s quote about the importance of democracy.
