Celebrity Reaction Time Person Of The Year The Silence Breakers

(TIME)

Celebrities are reacting to The Silence Breakers being named Time’s “Person Of The Year” 2017. The announcement was made on Wednesday’s “Today” show, which was followed by an interview with the magazine’s editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal. See stars’ reaction tweets and messages below.

“The 2017 ‘Person Of The Year’ is The Silence Breakers, the voices that launched a movement,” Felsenthal said on the morning show. The worldwide movement is associated with the #MeToo hashtag, which encouraged millions of people to share their stories and expose sexual predators. Felsenthal continued, “This is the fastest moving social change we’ve seen in decades, and it began with individual acts of courage by hundreds of women and some men too, who came forward to tell their own stories of sexual harassment and assault.” The group of women featured on the cover include Taylor Swift, Ashley Judd and former Uber driver Uber engineer Susan Fowler.

President Donald Trump, last year’s winner, came second for changing the “very nature of presidency.” As Gossip Cop reported, Trump claimed he turned down the Time “Person Of The Year” honor in November. He tweeted, “Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named ‘Man (Person) of the Year,’ like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!”

One celebrity weighing in on this year’s selection is Alyssa Milano, who wrote, “In 2017 women stood up and said #MeToo. We overcame our fears to #BreakTheSilence. Technology and social media have connected us all. We can’t turn away from each other’s pain. We are connected to it. We are connected to each other. We are connected. THREAD. #TimePOTY.” Rose McGowan, a prominent voice in the #MeToo movement, also said on Twitter, “I am my person of the year. Are you yours? #BRAVE. We should all live a life we can be proud of.” Josh Gad commented, “A breath of fresh air in a world of toxic storm clouds.” Jessica Chastain also remarked, “I am so proud to be a woman. I love you brave warriors.”

Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo offered, “Bravo. Thank you for your courage and conviction.” And Terry Crews, who spoke out about his experience of sexual assault in Hollywood last month, tweeted, “Honored to stand among these strong, brave individuals to fight for what’s right… and take our lives back.” Kerry Washington expressed, “Wow. This cover is very inspiring. I’m so especially moved by the presence of the faceless woman who speaks in anonymity. So brave. #MeToo THANK YOU @TIME.” And Ellen DeGeneres urged, “If you’re feeling like you’re too scared to speak up because the world doesn’t want to hear what you have to say, let this be proof that your voice matters.”

Olivia Munn, who came forward with allegations against Brett Ratner, tweeted “This” with emojis cheering the selection, while Beth Behrs posted, “#TimePersonOfTheYear: The Silence Breakers, who spoke out against sexual abuse and demanded justice and accountability. I commend TIME for this choice and stand with every woman and man who added their voice to the #MeToo movement. Most of all, we believe you. #sheherdpower.” Mandy Moore also commented, “A seismic cultural shift is underway. Long overdue. Thank you to all the brave women who have stood up for themselves and given a voice to the voiceless. #TimePersonOfTheYear #TheSilenceBreakers.”

And Demi Lovato took issue with part of the annual feature. She wrote in a series of tweets,”Time mag highlights brave women coming forward against sexual assault on the cover but names a man with sexual assault allegations against him runner up to person of the year.. Really @TIME? #hypocrites. I’ve become less vocal about my distain for certain people over the past year because it only divides our country even more but this is worth speaking up about. @TIME mag – very disappointed in your hypocrisy and disrespect toward the women on your cover.”

She went on, “To be named POTY by @TIME it should be for doing something positive or brave LIKE the women on the cover. It’s annoying that it’s just about impact on the news.” Gossip Cop will continue to update as more celebrities react to The Silence Breakers being named as Time’s “Person Of The Year” 2017.
