Celebrities are mourning and reacting to the news that Mel Tillis is dead. The country music star died on Sunday of respiratory failure in Ocala, Florida. A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Tillis recorded such hits as “Coca-Cola Cowboy,” “Good Woman Blues,” and “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town.” The singer and songwriter, who also was a frequent TV guest and appeared in a few films, was 85. Blake Shelton expressed his condolences in a series of tweets. He wrote, “Some of my most cherished memories are the times I spent with Mel Tillis. Many many great memories. From fishing, to just having a beer, to him crashing my concert!” He continued, “He once spent an entire day at his place in Tennessee showing me all the memorabilia he’d gathered over the years where he gave me a pair of his stage boots. He even took time to talk me through some hard times in my life on a couple phone calls.”

Shelton further eulogized, “He did his best to try and keep my head on straight. I looked up to Mel more than he could’ve possibly known. A talented songwriter. An incredible entertainer. And a funny funny guy. It has been a couple years since I saw him last. I deeply regret that now.” “What a truly devastating loss. I loved Mel. I will miss him terribly. My thoughts and prayers to all his family,” concluded the singer.

Charlie Daniels shared, “Mel Tillis, you will be missed by so many of us you touched over the years. Rest in peace my friend.” Crystal Gale added, “I’m saddened to hear of the passing of my friend, Mel Tillis. Sending my love and prayers to his family and friends. There will never be another Mel Tillis! #MelTillis #HeavenEveryday @PamTillis.”

Meanwhile, Randy Travis tweeted, “Mel Tillis was a special friend, great artist, and constant inspiration to me — Heaven’s choir just got sweeter.” Gov. Mike Huckabee said, “Sad news— Mel Tillis died. More than just a country star he was an authentic gentleman. He leaves a legacy of great music and a great daughter the lovely and talented @PamTillis.” And Kevin Smith wrote, “RIP Mel Tillis – one of my Dad’s favorite country stars AND one of Dad’s favorite go-to’s.
