Celebrities are reacting to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announcing it’s closing down for good after being in business for 146 years. Among the reasons cited for the closure was the growing pressure from animal rights groups, including PETA. Just last May, the elephants were retired from the circus’s two traveling troupes to a sanctuary in Florida. Ringling Bros. CEO Kenneth Feld said the show will go on until May 21, with the last performance taking place at the Nassau County Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. Now stars are sharing their reactions.

Seth MacFarlane expressed, “The closure of Ringling Bros. circus ends 146 years of animal humiliation for human amusement. Good riddance.” Stephen King tweeted, “Ringling Bros closing down, but will be replaced by the Pennywise Traveling Terror Tour. Bring the kids! Pennywise has balloons! Hooray.” And PETA activist Pamela Anderson ‏exclaimed, “IT’S OVER!”

Ricky Gervais tweeted, “At last, after 146 years, Ringling Brothers Circus is closing permanently! A victory for humanity. Next, we #EmptyTheTanks!” Jay Mohr cracked, “Ringling Brothers shutting down isn’t a ‘Massive victory for the animals’. It’s a shame. Now where’s an elephant go to get a nice hat?” He added in a subsequent message, “2017 just took a dark turn. Ringling Brothers Circus closes leaving 2,500 unemployed clowns just roaming the streets.” And Shaquille O’Neal, who retweeted a CNN story about the closing, wrote, “Famed Ringling Bros. circus closing – CNN noooooo pls don’t close whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy nooooooooo noooooooooo.”

Meanwhile, a few people used the opportunity to inject politics into the news of the circus shuttering. Ann Coulter offered, “Ringling Bros. Circus has closed. They just couldn’t compete with the Democrats since the election.” On the other side of the spectrum, George Takei stated, “After 146 yrs, Ringling Bros will close ‘Greatest Show on Earth.’ That title now goes to the daily shitshow coming from the President-elect.” And former governor Mike Huckabee shared, “Ringling Bro. Circus shutdown-very sad; Greatest Show on Earth won’t be seen by future generations. Thanks for the memories, RB!” Gossip Cop will continue to update as more celebrities react to the closing of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus after nearly a century and a half.
