Celebrities are reacting to the disturbing revelation that the infamous rape in Last Tango In Paris was real and not consensual. See stars’ reaction tweets below.

The controversial 1972 film was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and starred Marlon Brando as an American widower who embarks on a sexual relationship with a young French woman played by Maria Schneider. The movie was extremely explicit, and featured a scene in which Brando’s character rapes her. Prior to her 2011 death from cancer, Schneider said she was forced into doing the scene, and “felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci.”

Now a three-year-old interview has surfaced in which Bertolucci confirms that he and Brando did indeed force the sex scene upon Schneider, and did not tell her in advance what it would entail. Hollywood stars on Twitter are understandably expressing their disgust at the admission. Jessica Chastain, for instance, tweeted, “To all the people that love this film — you’re watching a 19yr old get raped by a 48yr old man. The director planned her attack. I feel sick.”

Jenna Fischer retweeted the comment, adding, “All copies of this film should be destroyed immediately. It contains an actual rape and sexual assault. #disgusting #disgrace.” Evan Rachel Wood also shared Chastain’s remarks, writing “I second that. This is heartbreaking and outrageous. The 2 of them are very sick individuals to think that was ok.” Another star who re-posted Chastain’s tweet was Octavia Spencer. She further said, “This is BEYOND disturbing. Rape!!!! So, in the director’s mind order for an actor to play a killer does he actually need to kill? Yikes!”

Chris Evans expressed, “Wow. I will never look at this film, Bertolucci or Brando the same way again. This is beyond disgusting. I feel rage.” Anna Kendrick replied to Evans’ tweet saying she “used to get eye-rolls when I brought it up to people (aka dudes).” She went on to say, “It wasn’t treated like a big story then (shocker). Glad at least it will be taken seriously now.” Evans wrote back, “Had no idea. Woulda felt rage then too. They should be in jail.”

“Special place in hell for these two scumbags and everyone on the crew that watched and did nothing. F*CK YOU,” Michael Cudlitz also posted. And Bryan Greenberg said, “OK not watching Last Tango In Paris ever again.” Bertolucci has not responded to the outcry. Brando died in 2004.
