Heard’s cause of death is currently unknown, but he died just a few days after undergoing “minor back surgery” at Stanford Medical Center in California. While recovering, the film and TV star was staying at a hotel in Palo Alto. A maid reportedly found Heard’s body, prompting a call to police for a medical emergency. But he was pronounced dead at the scene.

For many, Heard is best known for playing Macauley Culkin’s father in the Home Alone movies. But he also starred in a number of other notable projects. Films include After Hours, Big, Beaches, The Pelican Brief and White Chucks. For television, his role on “The Sopranos” scored the actor his first and only Emmy nomination. He also starred in “The Client,” and had recurring parts on “CSI: Miami,” “Prison Break,” “Entourage,” “Southland and “NCIS: Los Angeles.” In 2017 alone he guest-starred on “MacGyver,” “APB,” and “Outsiders.”

Now his passing has left many of his peers surprised and saddened. Jeff Bridges tweeted, “John Heard- what a wonderful actor. We were in the movie Cutter’s Way together & I got to experience his artistry and dedication first hand. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. We miss & love you, John.” Rob Lowe commented, “Sad to hear of John Heards passing. Did a production of Three Sisters with him years ago. Wonderful actor.”

“Rest In Peace,” posted Alyssa Milano. Radio Flyer co-star Elijah Wood shared, “Sad to hear of John Heard’s passing.” Michael McKean wrote,”RIP John Heard. Never not good.” Cher offered, “Goodbye John, You were such a Beautiful, Talented, Funny, Crazy, Boy.” Brent Spiner also expressed, “Very sad to hear that John Heard is gone. Could’ve been a star. Should’ve been a star. A truly great actor.”

James Van Der Beek, with whom Heard starred in Formosa Betrayed, wrote in a series of tweets, “John Heard was kind, irreverent and fun. He always colored outside the lines. Working w/ him was a master class in inventiveness… RIP. John Heard had this thing he’d do whenever a scene ended w/ me laying expositional pipe that always slayed me, he’d repeat what I’d said w/ wonder, and say, w/ absolute sincerity, as if it had just occurred to him: ‘I’m gonna write that down…’ He was such a good actor and so natural that he’d get me every time… RIP John.”

Big colleague Elizabeth Perkins tweeted, “Rest peacefully, Mr. John Heard. You were the perfect foil, perfectly sly & a perfect gentleman. Many prayers to his family and children.” Titus Welliver simply stated, “RIP John Heard.” And on Instagram, Marlon Wayans wrote, “I had the pleasure of working with John Heard in #whitechicks he was a great guy. Shared a lot of laughs. Sad to see such a good spirit and actor taken.”

Wayans continued, “Thank you for all your contributions to our beloved industry. May you live forever through your vast body of work. #ripjohnheard.” Daniel Stern, Heard’s Home Alone co-star, also tweeted a lengthy type-written tribute. Read it below.
