Harvey Weinstein was expelled from the Academy of Motion Pictures on Saturday, and now celebrities are reacting to the major decision. See reaction tweets from Hollywood stars below.

As Gossip Cop has reported, over the last week and a half, more than a dozen women have come forward to accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. Rose McGowan, who years ago received a confidential settlement from the movie mogul, has alleged he raped her. Other women have made similar disturbing claims. Last Sunday, The Weinstein Company, which he co-founded, fired him as chairman due to the allegations, but the executive reportedly plans to fight that move.

Regardless of how that plays out, Weinstein will now go down as only the second person to ever have his lifetime membership to the Academy revoked. The Board of Governors, which includes such top celebrities as Oprah and Tom Hanks, voted today to strip the producer of his membership. Weinstein joined the Academy years ago as part of the producers branch, and won an Oscar in 1998 for producing Shakespeare In Love. He was also nominated in 2002 for The Gangs Of New York.

In a statement, AMPAS says, “The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors met today to discuss the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, and has voted well in excess of the required two-thirds majority to immediately expel him from the Academy. We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over.”

The Academy adds, “What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.” Now a number of celebrities are weighing in on the decision. Emmy Rossum, for instance, exclaimed “Amen, the academy!!!” Marlee Matlin wrote, “Bravo to the @TheAcademy. And bravo to highlighting ‘willful ignorance and complicity.'” Jedediah Bila simply stated, “Good.”

“So now that we’ve dealt with Weinstein what are we going to do about Trump?” asked Josh Gad. Producer Bill Prady said, “Here’s the difference: the movie academy voted Weinstein out. The GOP voted Trump in.” Piers Morgan observed, “BREAKING: Oscars Academy expels Harvey Weinstein over ‘sexually predatory behavior. *Child rapist Roman Polanski remains a member.” Dave Holmes similarly noted, “Not Roman Polanski. Not Woody Allen. The only other Academy exile got 86’d for lending The Imitation Game to his mom.”

And shortly after the news broke, McGowan posted, “WE SLAY DRAGONS #ROSEARMY.” Gossip Cop will continue to add more reactions as they come in. Weinstein is pictured above at the Academy Awards earlier this year.
