Adam West, best known for playing Batman, is dead. He was 88. Celebrities are now reacting to his death and paying tribute to the late actor. See tweets from Hollywood stars below.

West’s passing from leukemia was announced on Saturday by his spokesperson, who noted, “A true American icon and beloved father and husband, he will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and millions of fans around the world.” He was survived by his wife, six children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family says in a statement, “Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero.”

West’s career spanned several decades and covered both film and television, but he will always be remembered for playing Bruce Wayne in the “Batman” TV series. Starring as the Caped Crusader from 1966 to 1968, he also memorably brought his version of the iconic comic book character to the big screen and voiced the role in several smaller projects . In recent years, he appeared on “30 Rock” and “The Big Bang Theory,” and received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. He also narrated the pilot of NC’s “Powerless,” which premiered earlier this year.

Upon hearing of his death, Michael McKean tweeted, “Farewell, Adam West.” Alyssa Milano stated, “Rest In Peace, Adam West.” Edgar Wright posted, “Farewell Adam West. You were MY Batman. Such a super funny, cool, charismatic actor. Loved the show as a kid, still love the show now. POW!” Bryan Fuller exclaimed in all-caps, “REST IN PEACE, MR. WEST.” Ben Affleck, who currently plays Batman in the Warner Bros. film franchise, wrote on Twitter, “Adam West exemplified heroism. Kind, funny and an all around great guy. Greg Berlanti, who adopted several DC comics for television, said, “Mr. West, thank you for all those afternoons you helped me and other 70’s kids dream about the fun of being a hero. RIP, good sir.” Jaden Smith tweeted, “Rest In Peace To The Legend To The Original Hero, Adam West thank You We Love You. #Batman.” And Will Arnett, the voice of Lego Batman, remarked, “RIP Adam West. You will always be Batman.”

Anthony Mason of CBS News also said, “The Bat Signal has gone out for my generation. Good night, Caped Crusader. Adam West (1928-2017).” And Kevin Smith, a well-known Batman superfan, posted a personal photo and lengthy tribute on Instagram. “Oh Batman my Batman! I’m standing on my chair to honor #adamwest – the man whose portrayal of costumed justice made me wanna be a good person when I was a boy. The #adamwestbatman was my first Batman at age 4. His performance was campy to most, but to me, that’s how true heroes spoke. A lifelong love of the character started with Mr. West’s interpretation of what he called, instead of the Dark Knight, the Bright Knight,” said the star.

Smith went on, “He brought joy to a somber character and a Fatherly tone to a TV role model. I was lucky enough to meet Adam many times, including the day at @stanleecomiccon when super-fan @ralphgarman and I hosted Adam, Boy Wonder #burtward and movie Catwoman #leemerriweather (where we took this pic). He was pure love and joy. He remained my hero, even in adulthood, as well as a real life role model for interacting with fans. Adam loved his fans – especially #ralphgarman, who worked tirelessly to get Adam a star on the @officialhollywoodwalkoffame.”

“Farewell, Caped Crusader. Off to Superhero Heaven you go, where all your rascally rogues are ready to see you again! Atomic batteries to power. Turbines to speed. Heart to broken,” Smith concluded. Burt Ward, who played Robin to West’s Batman, also said in his own statement, “I am devastated at the loss of one my very dearest friends,. Adam and I had a special friendship for more than 50 years. We shared some of the most fun times of our lives together. Our families have deep love and respect for each other.”

Ward continued, “This is a terribly unexpected loss of my lifelong friend. I will forever miss him. There are several fine actors who have portrayed Batman in films. In my eyes, there was only one real Batman that is and always will be Adam West. He was truly the Bright Night.” And Seth MacFarlane, who oversaw West’s recurring voice role on “Family Guy,” tweeted the below statement. Growing up an only child television became like a friend , it was the sound of the television that made me feel like I was never alone , my earliest memories are more tied to my favorite shows more than they are to people , since my family weren't really around much and no offense to them but they weren't as interesting as my TV family , sitting in my grandmother's house and hearing the opening song to Batman with the animated opening with the spinning logo and Batman and Robin fighting bad with and every punch had a BAM , POW , BOOM , in the last few seasons a Motorcyle would ride by at the end and everyone knew that Batgirl was on that show .. Everything about Batman I loved , the way Adam West would bounce into a room or when he danced that was #chingon .. Im honored to have these memories of Adam West but im especially proud of the fact that Adam West guest starred on #georgelopez Show playing my moms attorney, I can remember overwhelming him that first week with things to sign for everybody on the show , he actually told his agent that first week felt like a signing #gacho but we got it all worked out and he was brilliant , in the episodes we wrote that he slept with the judge played by Marilyn Milan he said " I proceeded to Hit it, and as the young people say quit it " #chingon , he also appeared on #lopeztonight where Jaime Foxx and I were carjacking the bat mobile ( the actual bat mobile ) and @iamjamiefoxx takes off and Adam cuffs me , he was an incredible actor and voice actor as well but more importantly he was a Hero of Mine who exceed my expectations when meeting him , tonight im gonna look up in the sky when I used to pretend I would see the Batman logo and im gonna say Thanks Adam West and Thank Batman for me too #respectfully the little boy from 14713 Hagar St
