The United Nations General Assembly deemed January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day to commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. In addition to memorializing all those who lost their lives during the Holocaust, the annual day also serves as a reminder to help prevent future genocides from occurring.

Josh Gad wrote, “I celebrate my grandparents, Evelyn and Joseph Greenblatt on this #holocaustmemorialday – we must never forget the lessons that created Nazi Germany. And we must always remember the bravery of those survivors who’s greatest fight was to simply live.” Paula Abdul posted a photo of herself at one of the exhibits inside a Holocaust museum, and said, “Thank you @yadvashem for the indescribably affecting Hall of Names- my visit changed my life. Never, NEVER AGAIN. #HolocaustMemorialDay.”

Marlee Matlin said, “Found out today from my brother that our Great Aunts I never met were lost in Holocaust. Impact is never ending.” Joss Whedon expressed, “I don’t have words for what today means. Well I have one, in case it was overlooked: Jews.” Sharing photos, Rachel Bloom told followers, “I went to @AuschwitzMuseum a few years ago and here’s some of what I saw. #HolocaustMemorialDay.”

Broadway star Ben Platt commented, “There’s never been a more important time to remember what can happen if we stay silent. Never again means NEVER AGAIN. #holocaustmemorialday.” Jessica Chastain noted, ” WW2- USA Turned Away Thousands of Jewish Refugees Fearing That They Were Nazi Spies. TODAY- Trump signs order banning Syrian refugees.”

Still, President Donald Trump released a statement on the official White House website commemorating the day. He said, in part, “In the name of the perished, I pledge to do everything in my power throughout my Presidency, and my life, to ensure that the forces of evil never again defeat the powers of good. Together, we will make love and tolerance prevalent throughout the world.”
