Has Catherine Zeta-Jones dumped Michael Douglas just three weeks after the death of his father, Kirk? That’s what one of the tabloids is alleging. Gossip Cop can debunk the bogus story.
Douglas’ legendary dad died at the age of 103 earlier this month, and according to Star, Zeta-Jones told her husband she was ending their marriage immediately following the funeral. “Catherine’s been miserable for a long time – years, even – but she kept it together for their kids’ and Kirk’s sake,” says an unidentified insider. “Kirk’s gone, and the kids are grown, so there’s just no use pretending anymore.”
The alleged source adds, “She stayed this long because she didn’t want to let Kirk down, he was so big on family and tradition. But now that her father-in-law is gone, so is her resolve not to stay in an unhappy situation.” The unknown tipster further alleges that Zeta-Jones was the one who cared for Kirk as his health declined, while Douglas was focused on his career instead. “She just wants to focus on herself and get away from Michael and his self-absorbed nonsense,” adds the questionable insider.
From there, the seemingly phony source says Zeta-Jones is already eager to date other men. “She’s not looking for anything serious,” says the anonymous insider. “She wants to have fun, buy new clothes and feel desirable again.” As for Douglas, the “source” maintains he’s “blindsided” by the situation and is desperately trying to win his wife back.
Gossip Cop, however, ran Star‘s story by Zeta-Jones’ spokesperson, who tells us it “couldn’t be further from the truth.” The actress’s rep, who’s qualified to speak on her behalf, further notes that the spouses “will return to Israel this summer to co-host The Genesis Prize Ceremony together on June 18, and are looking forward to it very much.” And in fact, The Genesis Prize Foundation just announced that Douglas and Zeta-Jones will be co-hosting the ceremony to honor Israeli politician Natan Sharansky. We checked in with Douglas’ rep as well, who tells us the tabloid’s report is “completely false.”
The only shred of truth in Star‘s story is that Zeta-Jones cared very much about her late father-in-law. The magazine is exploiting her close relationship with Kirk to create this tale of marital strife. The idea that Zeta-Jones had been waiting to divorce Douglas because she didn’t want to disappoint his dad is baseless.
Just last week, Zeta-Jones shared an Instagram photo of her and Douglas visiting India. She added the caption, “Love this man… Life is just better because of you.” On Valentine’s Day earlier this month, Zeta-Jones posted a photo of her and Douglas kissing, and added, “My forever Valentine.” Those are just two recent examples from the actress’s Instagram page proving she’s still very much in love with her husband of 19 years.
Last week, Gossip Cop busted Star for publishing an equally untrue story about Zeta-Jones and Douglas trying to save their marriage following the death of his father. This latest article is sort of a follow-up, but it’s also contradictory. Last week’s report said the spouses were both consumed with caring for Kirk, so they were trying to get back on track, which included going on a “second honeymoon” to Italy. That article was published almost two weeks after Kirk’s funeral, but according to this new report, she had already dumped her husband by then. The reason none of this adds up is because none of it is true.
