Underwood Urban CMT Awards 2017

Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban performed a new version of “The Fighter” at the 2017 CMT Music Awards on Wednesday. Check out the video below!

“The Fighter” was inspired by Urban’s early days with wife Nicole Kidman. It was featured on his album Ripcord, which came out in the spring of 2016. The track made an impression almost immediately, and was eventually sent to radio this past February as the record’s fifth single. So far, it’s peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

As Gossip Cop reported, Underwood and Urban previously performed “The Fighter” at the ACM Awards in April and the Grammy Awards in February. When it was announced in late May that they’d also bring the song to the CMT Music Awards, Urban tweeted, “@carrieunderwood and I are working to create a different take on #TheFighter for the #CMTawards!!! Can’t wait!”

Amazingly, this is the first time Underwood and Urban have performed on a CMT stage. And coincidentally, it’s not the stage that’s typically used for the CMT Music Awards. Because Underwood’s husband Mike Fisher and the Nashville Predators are playing for the Stanley Cup, this year’s ceremony was moved from its usual locale at the Bridgestone Arena to the Music City Center.

Underwood and Urban have both been attending the Predators’ playoff games, and each even took the ice to sing the National Anthem. There isn’t a Stanley Cup on the line tonight, but both stars could walk away with CMT Music Awards trophies. As Gossip Cop has reported, Urban is the night’s most nominated artist with four nods, including Video of the Year for “Blue Ain’t Your Color.” Underwood is also up for the top category for “Church Bells.” And it’s only fitting that their clip for “The Fighter” is a contender for Collaborative Video of the Year.

Notably, Underwood has won 15 honors at the CMT Music Awards over the course of her career, the most in the show’s history. That includes six wins for Video of the Year, which is a record. Urban has four CMT Awards, the last of which he won in 2010. No matter what the outcome at this year’s ceremony, fans at least have a new performance of “The Fighter” to enjoy.
