Carey Hart says he’s in “shock” over the death of Dave Mirra. The BMX biker was found dead in North Carolina on Thursday of a suspected suicide. He was 41.

Hart, a fellow BMXer, tweeted after the news broke, “I’m in complete shock. Angry, heartbroken and just sad at the passing of my friend Dave. Heartbroken 4 his daughters and wife.” The two pals are pictured at right at an invitational in 2003.

In a statement, Allen Thomas, the mayor of Hart’s hometown says, “We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon.”

Over the course of his career, Mirra amassed 24 medals in the X Games, including 14 gold ones. For non-sports fans, Mirra was best known for hosting MTV’s “Real World/Road Rules Challenge” during the “Inferno” and “Inferno II” seasons in 2004 and 2005. T.J. Lavin, who succeeded Mirra as the “Challenge” host, posted an Instagram photo with fellow BMX riders, writing, “Really love you guys…”

Corey Bohan, who was also pictured, shared the same snapshot on his own page, with the caption, “Thank you for everything Dave. Gonna miss you brotha. R.I.P.” Others paying tribute include Miles Teller, who tweeted, “RIP Dave Mirra… Damn.” Another famous fan, Joshua Malina, wrote, “R.I.P. Dave Mirra. So sad.”

The official “Challenge” Twitter account also posted, “Sad news tonight for the BMX world and The Challenge fam. Dave Mirra will sure be missed.” And the series’ production company, Bunim/Murray, tweeted, “Very sad to note the passing of former @ChallengeMTV host Dave Mirra. Our condolences to his family and friends.”

Mirra was active on his own Instagram up until just hours before his passing. Gossip Cop’s thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
