As Gossip Cop has reported, the Playoffs for season 13 of the NBC competition began on Monday. During this round, each coach has to narrow their team of six singers (five contestants and a “comeback artist”) down to just three. To facilitate this process, all perform solo songs, after which the coach decides which three to take to the live shows and which three to eliminate. Jennifer Hudson and Blake Shelton’s teams took the stage on Monday, while Adam Levine’s group was in the spotlight on Tuesday, where Addison Agen’s “Angel From Montgomery” performance was the clear highlight.

Now the third and last night of the Playoffs was all about Team Miley, for which Simpson has been the obvious standout. Following her four-chair Blind Audition, the aspiring star chose Miley Cyrus to be her coach and sailed through the Battles. Simpson performed “Natural Woman” for the Knockouts, as seen just last week, and it was no surprise that she dominated there, too. Now the powerhouse vocalist chose to perform another big, iconic song in hopes of being one of Cyrus’ three artists in the Top 12.

During rehearsal, Cyrus called the song selection a “genius choice.” She encouraged Simpson to be more “straightforward” and “less runny” in the beginning, while also showing her personality. “Miley, she’s pushing and challenging me to sing in ways that I didn’t even know on this song,” Simpson told the camera. She impressively belted the track when the time came, which led to a standing ovation from both Cyrus and Adam Levine. “Damn,” he exclaimed afterward, calling the performance “mind-blowing.”

Blake Shelton deemed the rendition “flawless” and “expert,” while Jennifer Hudson gave Simpson props for picking such an empowering anthem. Cyrus further called it a “perfect performance.” She added to Hudson after the contestant left the stage, “She’s one of the best.” That feedback seemed to suggest Simpson would make it through to the Lives, but she had to wait until after the five others on her team performed to find out the final decision. At the end of the episode, Cyrus announced she was keeping Simpson, Ashland Craft and Janice Freeman. Eliminated were Moriah Formica, Adam Pearce and comeback artist Karli Webster.
