As Gossip Cop reported, Simpson turned all four chairs with her Blind Audition performance of Demi Lovato’s “Stone Cold,” which aired on the season 13 premiere in September. All the coaches made desperate pitches, with Miley Cyrus telling her, “I’m gonna win this season and I wanna do it with you.” Fortunately, the aspiring singer wanted to do it with the pop star, too, and chose to join Team Miley. Simpson went on the Battles, where she defeated fellow contestant Sophia Bollman.

Now for the third round of the NBC competition, Simpson was tasked with competing against Stephan Marcellus, the only male on Cyrus’ previously all-female team. Cyrus explained that she wanted these two to go head to head because they both have “huge voices.” But unlike the Battles, where the artists perform duets, here they had to give solo performances. And for her turn on the stage, Simpson picked the Aretha Franklin classic. In rehearsal, key advisor Kelly Clarkson said Simpson should tone down her performance in the beginning to not take away from what she’s actually singing.

Meanwhile, Marcellus chose “Impossible” by Shontelle for his song choice. He was told to change the melody to show off his lower tones. Clarkson thought their voices were relatively even, but they were different kinds of performers. Following the big performances, Cyrus was on her feet for Simpson while she and his former coach, Jennifer Hudson, both stood for Marcellus. Still, Hudson said about Simpson, “At the end of the day, this show is called ‘The Voice,’ and that girl right there has got a voice.”

Adam Levine was all about Simpson, too, saying, “Where’s the ceiling for this girl? Brooke, I will see you in the finale.” But Blake Shelton called this a “tricky one” for Cyrus, arguing that Marcellus has the “X-factor thing.” Cyrus herself called it a “really tough decision,” but it was no surprise that frontrunner Simpson scored the win.
