What happened to Britney Spears getting secretly engaged to Sam Asghari and having a third child via surrogate? Exactly one year ago, Gossip Cop busted a tabloid for incorrectly reporting that the singer was due for a wedding and another baby. It was never true.
On November 12, 2018, NW claimed Spears was “ready for her next adventure,” adding a third child to her family. The outlet, citing an unnamed “source,” said the singer had found a willing surrogate that lived close to her family home in Louisiana and had even looked into “gender-selected IVF treatments” to ensure she has a daughter. The tabloid further argued that Spears wanted a surrogate on account of her past difficulties with “postnatal depression.” As far as the engagement, the magazine claimed the pop star had a “rumored ring on her finger” to complement “the potential for a new daughter.”
Gossip Cop checked in with our source in Spears’ camp, who told us the rumors were false. The entire piece was rife with unsure language about the actual claims, and to date, we’re still not entirely sure what counts as a “rumored ring.” It was another case of an outlet publishing a salacious headline and tempering it in the actual article.
As we pointed out at the time, the story was unsurprisingly similar to other “reports” from the tabloid. Oddly enough, the magazine didn’t even mention those previous stories, which included a bogus claim about Spears being pushed into rehab and another one about the singer’s father trying to stop a separate engagement to Asghari. The magazine was clearly just printing incorrect story after incorrect story about the singer, and this “secret engagement” was no exception.
Asghari has addressed the marriage question, mentioning in an interview with Entertainment Tonight this past September that he “absolutely” envisions marrying Spears at some point in the future. “Trust me,” he said, “if we do ever get married, everybody’s going to know.” Should the two actually get engaged, that news is going to come from reliable news outlets, not untrustworthy tabloids.
Considering the fact that it’s also been well more than nine months after Spears had supposedly found her surrogate, it’s become absolutely clear that Gossip Cop was correct. There’s been nothing to suggest any truth in the old rumors since they were published or that Spears is looking to expand her family. The pop star seems to be currently focused on her next project, a Los Angeles-based pop-up experience that allows fans to experience Spears’ most famous music videos. Should the singer decide to expand her family, expect to hear it from a legitimate source — not a grocery store tabloid.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
