Is Britney Spears headed for a breakdown over her dad Jamie Spears' recent health issues? That's the claim in one of this week's tabloids. Gossip Cop has learned the story is completely untrue.

Last week, the singer announced that she was taking an "indefinite work hiatus" to care for her father, who faced a life-threatening health crisis in December when he suffered a ruptured colon. Spears explained in an Instagram post that her father "was hospitalized and almost died." As a result, the performer is putting her "full focus and energy" on her family, and postponing her Las Vegas residency, Domination, as well as her new album.

Unfortunately, the Globe is now exploiting the situation by alleging that Spears may suffer "a new mental meltdown" as a result of her dad's health scare. A supposed source tells the magazine, "This could put her right back on the path to a breakdown. Britney was jolted after her dad almost died. Now, she'll ride off the rails without his supervision."

Spears has been under a conservatorship overseen by her father since suffering a breakdown in 2008, but she's been happy and healthy for the past decade. The outlet's "insider," however, says the singer may go off the deep end without her dad's guardianship. "As long as she stays on a regimented schedule - like doing her shows every night - she's fine," says the questionable tipster. "Now that she's not doing the show, Britney could go over the edge from worrying about her father."

Naturally, the singer is concerned about her dad's well-being, but the idea that she could mentally unravel over the situation simply isn't accurate. Gossip Cop checked in with a mutual pal of ours and Spears, who wasn't able to go on the record, but assures us the tabloid's story is simply "not true." We're further told no one in the singer's trusted inner circle is speaking to the magazine about her personal life.

It's worth noting, the tabloids have been making up stories about the singer's mental state for quite some time. Last June, Gossip Cop busted the Globe's sister outlet, RadarOnline, for falsely claiming Spears' family feared she was headed for "another meltdown" over her child support battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline. Later that month, Star published a similar story alleging Spears was "falling apart" amid the legal battle.

Last August, Gossip Cop debunked a phony report about Spears' family urging her to go back to rehab because her court battle with Federline was taking a toll on her. Every time Spears deals with a troubling personal matter, the tabloids insist she's headed for a "breakdown." The singer never had meltdown amid her child support battle with her ex-husband, and she's no closer to having one over her dad's health issues.

Our Verdict

Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
