Brad Pitt‘s son Maddox really loved The Good, The Bad And The Ugly when he was a kid. In fact, his review of the movie for his mother, Angelina Jolie, impressed Quentin Tarantino so much, the director called it “one of the best reviews I’ve ever heard.” The review came when Maddox was just nine-years-old.
Tarantino was a guest on the podcast ReelBlend this week. During their conversation, host Sean O’Connell asked the director what movie he can’t wait to show his soon-to-be-born first child. Tarantino’s answer was The Good, The Bad and The Ugly because he’s seen how other fathers and sons have reacted to the Clint Eastwood classic. The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood director then told a story about hosting a screening for Pitt and his young Maddox back in 2008.
Tarantino explained that the movie is an important one to him. He has a 35mm print of the film, and often hears from dads, “My son has never seen that movie and I would love to watch that movie with my son.” The Hollywood legend added, “One of the best reviews I’ve ever heard was for The Good, The Bad And the Ugly.”
During the filming of Inglourious Basterds, Tarantino screened the film for the cast and crew. “So [Pitt] walks in with Maddox, and they sit in the back and Maddox really loved it and [Pitt] was really proud of him. After the screening, Pitt and Maddox went home and, Tarantino explained, “His mom [Angelina Jolie] is waiting for them, and they come walking through the door and Angie goes, ‘So, Maddox, did you like the movie?'” to which the boy said, “Yeah mom! It was terrific. I loved it!”
According to Tarantino, Jolie replied, “‘Wow, that’s fantastic! Well, what was the movie about?'” to which Maddox responded, “‘Well, it’s about this good guy. And it’s about this bad guy…and it’s about this ugly guy!’ And [Jolie] goes, ‘Well, which did you like the best?’ And Maddox thinks about it… ‘I like the ugly guy!'” “That’s a great review for the movie!” exclaimed the Pulp Fiction director.
The tabloids hit Pitt pretty hard for his relationship with Maddox, so it’s heartening to hear a positive story about their relationship. While it may be strained now, it hasn’t always been. Hopefully, time will heal whatever wounds remain. Perhaps one day, Pitt and Maddox will hang out with Tarantino and watch The Good, The Bad and The Ugly again.
