A story claiming Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are “planning on eloping” was made up. And not only was it fabricated, but it actually contradicts a report that was manufactured just days ago. Gossip Cop can explain what’s going on with all this fake news.

Gossip Cop regularly points out that HollywoodLife is a fabrication factory that routinely concocts narratives about popular stars and hot topics. In many of these cases, actual “sources” and “insiders” aren’t actually talking with the webloid, but have been invented to give false credence to the articles. This sometimes becomes more apparent when several stories are looked at together. They show a pattern of inconsistency that indicate the site really doesn’t have true insight at all.

For example, two weeks ago, HollywoodLies, as it’s known, speculated Stefani and Shelton were engaged after he “secretly proposed.” The contention was based on the No Doubt front woman supposedly wearing a diamond ring. The outlet had no photographic evidence of this alleged bauble and didn’t bother to fact-check its claims with Stefani’s rep. Just over a week later, the online publication pretended it never wrote that engagement story and offered up a purported “exclusive” contending Stefani is “convinced” Shelton won’t propose this year and that she would be “completely surprised if he were to propose.” This obviously contradicted the prior article about Shelton already having “secretly proposed.”

And now days after that, the blog has flip-flopped again. Now HollywoodLies is asserting it “EXCLUSIVELY learned” the couple “may be taking it to the next level in a simple way and eloping soon.” A so-called “source” is quoted as saying, “They know that is going to be a big deal when they finally get themselves married. So much so that they are considering just eloping and then having a big party to celebrate with friends and family.” This alleged snitch supposedly adds, “It’s something that has been discussed on a few occasions so they are definitely thinking about it being one of their options since they’ll be getting married eventually anyways.”

Let’s look at this timeline again: HollywoodLies first claimed Stefani and Shelton were engaged and she was wearing an engagement ring after he proposed. Then the webloid claimed Stefani isn’t expecting Shelton to propose in 2017. And now the site is claiming their “strong romance may be moving forward into marriage soon” with potential plans to elope. This was all published over a two-week period. And it begs a number of questions that ultimately prove what Gossip Cop said above: These are made-up stories that are concocted without any real access to either star’s camp.

Because if the outlet really has these “sources” who are supposedly “close to the couple,” why did it claim Stefani and Shelton were engaged two weeks ago, only to then claim Stefani isn’t expecting a proposal? If there’s actually “sources,” why did the publication go from claiming she isn’t expecting a proposal to claiming they’re planning an elopement? The narrative would be consistent if there were legitimate and authentic insiders working with the blog. But since there aren’t, HollywoodLies is constantly changing course and playing every possible angle. That serves to dis-inform, not inform, readers, which is the exact opposite of the goal of journalism.

But it seems clear the publication isn’t about journalism. It’s about scoring traffic through original content, even if that content is made up. And it’s transparent that all three stories detailed here, including this new elopement tale, are nothing but fake news.
