Miss Georgia Wins Miss America

Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell was crowned the winner at the Miss America 2016 pageant in Atlantic City on Sunday. The 21-year-old beat out 51 other contestants, including runner-up Hannah Roberts of Mississippi. Watch the video below.

Cantrell takes over the title from Miss New York Kazantsev, who won last year’s competition.

The pageant began with 15 contestants after preliminary competitions last week whittled the number down. After the swimsuit competition, three women were eliminated, leaving Miss Tennessee, Miss Iowa, Miss Alabama, Miss Nebraska, Miss Florida, Miss Oklahoma, Miss South Carolina, Miss Louisiana, Miss Georgia, Miss Mississippi, Miss Colorado and Miss Texas still in contention. Following the formal evening wear round, 10 of the remaining 12 hopefuls advanced to the talent competition. Miss Iowa and Miss Nebraska were eliminated.

In the following round, the remaining women showed off their talents, with Miss Florida performing a ballet routine to “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and Miss Texas performing her rendition of the Dusty Springfield hit “Son of a Preacher Man.”

During the question and answer portion of the competition, Miss Alabama received cheers from the Atlantic City, New Jersey crowd for her comment that the Republican party should be “absolutely terrified” about all the attention Donald Trump is receiving in his run for president. Miss Georgia, however, seemed to flounder when asked about whether New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady cheated.

As Gossip Cop previously reported, the Miss America pageant was hosted by Chris Harrison and Brooke Burke-Charvet. The head judge was Vanessa Williams, the first African-American to win Miss America. But after she was the crown in 1984, Williams had to resigned when naked pictures she had posed for several years earlier were published in Penthouse. The other judges in the competition were Danica McKellar, Zendaya, “Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary, former “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Amy Purdy, country singer Brett Eldredge, and Taya Kyle, Navy Seal Chris Kyle’s widow.

Going into Sunday’s finale it seemed like Miss Iowa Taylor Wiebers was a favorite, having won the preliminary swimsuit and talent competitions last week.
