Ben Affleck did not secretly relapse months prior to his slip this past weekend, despite an untrue tabloid report. Gossip Cop can correct the story. It’s not accurate.

As widely reported, Affleck suffered a sobriety setback over the weekend when he was filmed stumbling outside of a Halloween party in Los Angeles. The actor later admitted he had a “slip,” adding, “I’m not going to let it derail me.” According to In Touch, however, he’s been slipping for a while now.

A supposed source tells the magazine that Affleck has been partying hard for months, adding, “He’s been going to late-night Hollywood parties, hanging out with the wrong people, people he barely knows and who don’t care about him.” The unknown source adds, “Many of them are scammers and are just using him. It’s sad and crazy, because he is this huge celebrity and looks like a fool.”

On the night of Affleck’s relapse over the weekend, he was later spotted gambling at the Commerce Casino. The tabloid alleges the actor “lost $60,000 in 40 minutes” while sitting at a poker table. A so-called “witness” is quoted as saying, “He refused to fold, so people were just taking his money.”

This claim isn’t remotely true. In fact, TMZ correctly reported that Affleck won $1,500 at the casino after less than 15 minutes of gambling and then left. Although the actor was in fact drinking and gambling on Saturday night, In Touch can’t be trusted to report the facts. This idea that he lost $60,000 is just one inaccuracy that speaks to the larger problem with the magazine’s story: it’s filled with fake details designed to exploit the actors’ struggle with sobriety.

On Saturday, shortly before the actor’s slip at the Halloween party, Affleck shared an Instagram post noting that he’s been “in recovery for over a year” and asked his followers to donate to The Midnight Mission, an origination that provides recovery services for those in need. In late August, People magazine noted that Affleck was in a “great place” after celebrating a year of sobriety. Unfortunately, the actor fell off the wagon last weekend, but the idea that he’s been spiraling out control for months is completely false.

Affleck himself has admitted that he’s struggled with alcohol addiction for years, and is owning up to his most recent setback. In Touch, however, has zero insight into what’s going on with the actor’s recovery or anything that’s transpired prior to past weekend. The magazine certainly doesn’t know what happened at the casino that night either. Gossip Cop also ran the report by Affleck’s spokesperson, who confirms it’s off-base.

Last year, Gossip Cop busted the magazine for wrongly reporting that Affleck was marrying Lindsay Shookus and having a baby with her. The actor and the Saturday Night Live producer have since split. Whether it’s Affleck’s love life or his recovery, the tabloid just offers its own fictitious takes.
