Did Ben Affleck take Lindsay Shookus on vacation to save their relationship? That's the premise of a new tabloid story. Gossip Cop, however, can debunk it.
Late last month, Affleck and Shookus were photographed shopping in Puerto Rico. Now In Touch is using the sighting to claim the "romantic getaway" was orchestrated by the actor to reaffirm their commitment. What was supposedly the problem? The magazine claims the "slow process of Ben's divorce" from Jennifer Garner was "starting to 'cause friction' in the relationship."
"Ben and Jen are still in the process of dividing assets. Ben went out of his way to ease Lindsay's mind by whisking her away — and now they're back on track," a so-called "source" is quoted as saying. Maintains this untraceable snitch, "They wanted to switch off from the outside world and just enjoy each other's company." Indeed, the rest of the article is filled with claims about "long walks" and "candlelit dinners." The alleged tipster concludes that they are "madly in love," while the outlet asserts they're "still going strong."
Tellingly, nothing is said about Affleck and Shookus getting married and starting a family, which is what this same publication claimed was on their agenda exactly a month ago. In that tale, the fact that he and Garner are still legally wed was described as a "minor obstacle," and it was noted that Shookus, too, still isn't divorced. Now this new story makes no mention of their purported marriage and baby plans, but makes it seem like the "SNL" producer is unhappy his marriage hasn't been dissolved yet when hers hasn't, either.
Here's what's really going on: Because Affleck and Shookus were spotted in Puerto Rico, the tabloid manufactured a backstory for the trip, and threw in a few lines about relationship problems to make it sensational and dramatic. But since it's visibly apparent all is well between them, the magazine was sure to include an out by having its unnamed "source" conveniently add that they're "back on track." But it was already known in June that Affleck and Shookus were "still going strong," and there was never any indication of "friction" in the time since, despite what's alleged here.
Furthermore, it seems neither the outlet nor its "source" know the real reason they were in Puerto Rico. It had nothing to do with the movie star "whisking" the Emmy winner away for a "getaway." As People reported, Affleck and Shookus' mall outing in Puerto Rico came while he was on a break from shooting his latest movie on the island. Netflix announced in early July that The Last Thing He Wanted has been filming in Puerto Rico with a cast that includes not only Affleck, but Anne Hathaway and more notable names, such as Willem Dafoe.
That this isn't acknowledged anywhere in the article, and instead the publication gives readers the impression that Affleck went on a Puerto Rican vacation to save his relationship, underscores how bogus this story is. As a result, In Touch is showing its true colors: It's inexcusably out of touch.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
