Are Ben Affleck and Lindsay Shookus engaged? A tabloid is now claiming Affleck proposed to the "Saturday Night Live" producer. Gossip Cop can, however, debunk this absolutely false report.
According to NW, after the actor and Shookus got back together in February, Affleck "knew he had to step up and do something big to win her back." In an attempt to lend credence to its story, the tabloid quotes an anonymous "source" as saying, "He's been lonely without Lindsay and he wants to share his life with her. Conveniently, the outlet tries to cover its made-up premise by adding how Shookus is "definitely mulling [the proposal] over."
Glaringly omitted in the magazine's manufactured article is when, where, and how Affleck supposedly proposed to Shookus. Nowhere in the fabricated story is it mentioned whether he popped the question in New York, where she lives, or in Los Angeles, where his main residence is, or if it was somewhere else. Did Affleck ask for her hand in marriage last month, last week, or just yesterday? And did he present the "SNL" producer with a ring and, if so, what does it look like?
Of course, the tabloid has no answers to any of those questions because its "source" seemingly knows nothing about the couple. Conversely, Gossip Cop approached Affleck's rep, who's authorized to speak on his behalf, and we're exclusively told the outlet's story is untrue. He and Shookus are not engaged, nor do they have plans to be anytime soon. Additionally, reputable places like People are also reporting that while Affleck and Shook us are back together, they're taking things slowly.
It bears noting how NW does not have a stellar track record when it comes to articles about the Argo actor. Last year, while in the midst of their divorce, the magazine inaccurately maintained Affleck and Jennifer Garner were giving their marriage and "second shot" and getting back together. Not content with being wrong just once, the very same publication later alleged Affleck and Garner were getting back together for the sake of their kids. In reality, three months after that off-base tale, the two finalized their divorce and Garner began dating CaliBurger CEO John Miller.
Gossip Cop actually has a very fair proposal: Maybe places like that tabloid and others should focus more on the facts and less on crafting their own fiction. Time will tell whether Affleck proposes to Shookus one day down the road. For the time being, however, they are not engaged nor did he pop the question.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
