Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are divorcing. The announcement comes one day after their 10th anniversary, and weeks after rumors of marital strife heated up.

In a statement released Tuesday, the couple says, “After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce. We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding.”

Despite the announcement, the movie stars will not immediately file their divorce petitions. Affleck and Garner are first working privately with a mediator to negotiate settlement terms. It is expected, however, that they will share custody of their kids.

Affleck and Garner wed on June 29, 2005. They have three kids together: 9-year-old Violet, 6-year-old Seraphina, and 3-year-old Samuel. This will be Affleck’s first divorce and Garner’s second, as she was previously married to Scott Foley.

As Gossip Cop has reported, Affleck and Garner have been dogged by split rumors throughout their marriage. Gossip Cop accurately corrected countless false tabloid divorce stories about them over the years. But, as noted in our June 17 story, our sources went radio silent earlier this month when we inquired about a new round of breakup reports.

Affleck and Garner were last seen in public together in mid-June. They last attended an event together in late March, when the now-former couple traveled to Washington, D.C., with Violent for Affleck’s testimony before a Senate committee.
