Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are not getting a $150 million divorce, despite a false tabloid report. Gossip Cop can correct the bogus story. The former first couple, who celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary last week, are still going strong.
According to the Globe, however, the former president has ripped off his wedding ring and is consulting with divorce lawyers. The outlet alleges the Obamas have been fighting over Michelle's "snooty Hollywood lifestyle and his refusal to get a real job." An alleged insider tells the magazine, "When Barack hurled his ring at Michelle, that was the end. Word is, they're both consulting high-powered divorce attorneys. They're not even speaking to each other at this point. They have their 'people' communicating for them."
Gossip Cop needs to pause here to point out how wrong this article is from the get-go. The magazine's only proof of Barack ripping off his wedding ring is that he wasn't wearing it during a speaking engagement in Germany on September 29. It's been widely reported over the years that Barack takes off his wedding ring whenever he's in public because does a lot of handshaking and doesn't want to risk losing it. The former president's occasionally ringless finger isn't a sign of marital problems.
From there, the questionable tipster says Michelle plans to get "revenge" on her husband by running for president, adding, "It's payback time. Michelle knows she's way more popular than Barack and intends on humiliating him by winning the White House and being a much better commander-in-chief. Barack is stunned. In addition to losing half his fortune, Michelle is looking to upstage his political legacy."
Gossip Cop needs to pause yet again. Just two months ago, Michelle said in an interview with The National that there's "zero chance" she'd run for president. The former first lady explained, "There are so many ways to improve this country and build a better world... But sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office will never be one of them. It's just not for me."
The tabloid then contradicts itself by also contending that Michelle "wants her own talk show and refuses to give up her dreams of Hollywood stardom," but Barack is refusing to move to Los Angeles and hates the idea of "socializing with Michelle's celeb friends." So which is it? Does Michelle plan to run for president or does she want to become a Hollywood star? The unreliable outlet can't even stick to one phony narrative. The seemingly phony source concludes, "Barack and Michelle have been at each other's throats for the longest time. Something was bound to give - and it has!"
In addition to every supplementary detail of this story being untrue, the overarching premise is totally wrong as well. On October 3, Barack celebrated his 27th wedding anniversary with an Instagram post reading, "Like the Beatles said: It's getting better all the time. Thanks, babe, for 27 amazing years!" Michelle shared an Instagram post of her own, writing, "27 years ago, this guy promised me a life full of adventure. I'd say he's delivered. Here's to our next chapter of becoming empty nesters and discovering what's next — while still feeling the magic that brought us together all those years ago. Happy anniversary, Barack." Suffice to say, the Obamas aren't divorcing and nothing about the tabloid's report is remotely factual.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
