Ashley Tisdale says music artists shouldn’t “target” each other “for the sake of controversy.” And while she insists her comments aren’t specific to “one person,” they come after Taylor Swift released her controversial new diss song.

On Saturday afternoon, Tisdale wrote on Twitter, “Music is supposed to bring us together. It’s supposed to unite us. When we have artists targeting each other for the sake of controversy the art suffers. When will [we] try to stop bringing each other down and start lifting us up when we live in a world that’s doing exactly that?” The singer-actress added a few minutes later, “And I’m not talking about one person I’m talking about the music in general.” See screengrab below.

Tisdale also elaborated to a follower who had told her, “Sorry gal this aint Disney world.” The “High School Musical” star said in response, “It doesn’t have to be. When I listen to music it helps me with whatever I’m going through but if I’m listening to a song that I know is about another artist it completely takes me out of that. If I’m going through issues I want to feel like that artist understands. But when that artist is purely making it about themselves how are we supposed to relate?”

Though Tisdale didn’t mention Swift or any other performer by name, a number of people wrote back with remarks mentioning not just the superstar, but also Kanye West and Katy Perry. Swift’s new single, “Look What You Made Me Do,” is believed to be about her ongoing feud with West and his wife, Kim Kardashian. Many have interpreted the lyrics, such as lines about a “titled stage” and the phrase “kingdom keys,” to be references to the rapper and the reality star.

Swift herself has not commented on the song at all, and seems to be planning to let the content and the music video, which will premiere on Sunday, speak for itself. As for her reported targets, Gossip Cop is told West currently has no plans to respond to Swift’s diss track. That should be a relief to Tisdale.
