Armie Hammer is slamming James Woods for dissing Call Me By Your Name. The critically-acclaimed film explores a gay romance, and has earned the ire of some conservatives.

Based on the 2007 novel of the same name, Call Me By Your Name stars Hammer as a young scholar who has an unexpected romance with a teen as he spends the summer with the 17-year-old’s family. The book was well-reviewed, and the film adaptation has been surrounded by buzz since it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival back in January. The movie screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, and will open in theaters in November.

On Sunday, the website Towerload tweeted a link to an article that featured a recording of Hammer reading from the audiobook. Conservative writer Chad Felix Greene, who is gay, retweeted the post with the comment, “24 year old man. 17 year old boy. Stop.” Woods in turn shared that comment, adding, “As they quietly chip away the last barriers of decency. #NAMBLA.” NAMBLA refers to the North American Man/Boy Love Association, an organization that promotes pedophilia and is against age of consent laws.

Hammer caught wind of Woods’ remark on Monday, and hit back at the actor for seemingly being hypocritical. “Didn’t you date a 19 year old when you were 60…….?” Hammer asked (see screengrab below). In 2013, as Gossip Cop reported at the time, Woods stepped out with a 20-year-old girlfriend, showing affection on the red carpet at the White House Down premiere. He was 66, and the age difference prompted considerable discussion on social media.

Now, however, Woods has yet to respond to Hammer’s retort. Greene, on the other hand, has sent dozens of tweets defending his disgust over the movie, including one Monday that told followers, “See my timeline for the liberal argument in favor of adult-teen sex and the irrational hostility towards speaking out against it.” For his part, Woods is no stranger to offending fellow celebrities with his anti-gay views. Back in May, Woods made a homophobic “butt plug” joke about Anderson Cooper, and feuded with Neil Patrick Harris in July after mocking a family for supporting their gender-creative son.

UPDATE: Later Monday, Amber Tamblyn tweeted to Hammer, “James Woods tried to pick me and my friend up at a restaurant once. He wanted to take us to Vegas. ‘I’m 16’ I said. ‘Even better’ he said.” Hours later, Woods responded to a follower, who asked about both the film’s relationship and Tamblyn’s claim. “The first is illegal. The second is a lie,” he replied.

He went on to tweet, “Somebody told me the libs are yelping. Troll traffic is up. I don’t pay any attention really. I like Armie Hammer as an actor though. A lot. Okay, now I want all my little trolls to put on their onesies and go to bed! Final word on this: I don’t give a [expletive] what liberals think.”
