Did Armie Hammer delete his Twitter to cover up his likes of BDSM photos? That’s the salacious story being offered in the tabloids, but it’s mostly inaccurate. Gossip Cop can help set the record straight.

“Armie’s Fifty Shades Fetish,” reads the headline in Star, which asserts the actor is “scrubbing his social network clean after he was caught liking several saucy BDSM pics on Twitter this year.” A so-called “friend” is quoted as saying, “Armie is usually pretty good at poking fun at himself and laughing things off. But his people were starting to worry that a secret S&M fetish could be too much for audiences and Academy members to swallow.”

Actually, the Call Me By Your Name star has openly spoken about his sexual preferences in interviews, as Gossip Cop even reported in 2013, so it’s not like merely shutting down his Twitter will erase his history. And while it’s true fans and outlets noticed back in March that Hammer was liking BDSM Twitter posts, it’s ridiculous to connect that to his decision to delete his account in November. It’s not as if members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences were now going to go scrolling through months of his Twitter history before deciding whether to award him an Oscar.

The actual reason Hammer quit Twitter is arguably scandalous, but has nothing to do with his sex life. His decision came after using his page to criticize a Buzzfeed article written about his career and why he hasn’t been as successful as some have thought he ought to be. In response to the story, he tweeted, “Your chronology is spot on but your perspective is bitter AF. Maybe I’m just a guy who loves his job and refuses to do anything but what he loves to do…?” Shortly after, his account was gone.

Hammer later explained why he quit Twitter at a film event, saying, “I just have no impulse control. So if somebody says something stupid, I couldn’t help but say something back, and then it just exploded.” He went on, “This is a toxic environment, and my life is way better off. It’s so funny; People are so addicted and into Twitter, it seems crazy that someone could walk away from it! They’re like, ‘Wait, he deleted it?’ It was actually really easy.”

In short, Hammer chose to remove his Twitter presence after a social media dust-up, in which he realized he was currently “better off” staying away. It had nothing to do with liking BDSM photos nine months ago. It seems Star simply wanted a seedy narrative instead of running the true reason explained by the actor himself two weeks ago.
