Annabelle: Creation is the fourth film in The Conjuring franchise. The series began in 2013 and was inspired by real-life paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. Annabelle, a prequel to The Conjuring, was released in 2014. And then The Counjuring 2 came out in 2016. Now Creation is a prequel to Annabelle, and explains the origins of the frightening doll.

Annabelle opened with $37.1 million when it came out nearly three years ago. Now Annabelle: Creation earned nearly the same amount. It’s first weekend in theaters took in $35 million in ticket sales. That was enough to take first place, as the rest of the box office totals for the weekend were downright scary.

Dunkirk hung on to second place with a mere $11.4 million. The new kids’ movie The Nut Job 2 only nabbed $8.9 million for third. Down more than 60 percent in its second weekend, The Dark Tower slipped from first place last week to fourth this weekend. Its gross was $7.9 million. And landing in the fifth position with $6.6 million was The Emoji Movie.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Girls Trip in sixth place with $6.5 million, followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming, which had a seventh-place finish with $6.1 million. Securing eighth was Kidnap with $5 million. Meanwhile, The Glass Castle came in ninth with $4.9 million. And just making it into the last spot was the Charlize Theron action film, Atomic Blonde. The movie earned $4.6 million.
