Angelina Jolie was never forced to “quit Hollywood” after her split from Brad Pitt. One year ago, a website falsely claimed the actress would lose her career due to the breakup. Time, however, has shown Gossip Cop was right to bust the questionable story.

On February 24, 2017, we called out Celeb Dirty Laundry after it published a piece titled, “Angelina Jolie Forced To Quit Hollywood After Brad Pitt Divorce: Nobody Wants To Work With The Divorced Solo Star?” The site asserted Jolie’s professional future was in jeopardy because “executives aren’t as keen to work with her as they used to be.” As evidence, the website pointed to Jolie exiting Murder On The Orient Express, even though her departure from that project came more than a month before she separated from Pitt. It made no sense, then, to suggest the divorce affected her participation in that film when the breakup hadn’t even happened yet.

From there, the blog went on to claim Jolie’s “price tag” had “become far too high to justify, even for bigwigs like Netflix.” Yet it was Netflix that went on to release First They Killed My Father worldwide last fall, to much critical acclaim. The streaming service fulfilled the deal it struck with Jolie in 2015, regardless of her separation from Pitt. Still, the outlet argued that “the hysteria around ‘Brangelina’ alone was enough to draw eyeballs to every move they made,” and stressed, “But now, it’s just Angelina.” Questioned the online publication, “Without Brad Pitt, is her star power enough to sustain the same moves she used to pull before her divorce?”

The actress, of course, was successful long before she and Pitt linked up in 2005. Jolie won her Oscar for Girl, Interrupted in 2000. And while some celebrities are considered to have more “star power,” so to speak, when they’re coupled up in a high-profile relationship, the site really had no firm reasoning to support why Jolie wouldn’t still be able to work in Hollywood following her divorce from Pitt. Developments in the 12 months since the article came out have proven that the theory that “nobody” would want to work with her was baseless.

Jolie’s Maleficent 2 scored a director last October, and production is expected to begin in the coming months. And just days ago, it was revealed Sam Rockwell will team up with Jolie for The One And Only Ivan, for which she is both producing and voicing a character. Clearly, the notion that Hollywood would be “losing interest in Angelina’s solo brand” had no merit. Just as we said at the time, Jolie is an A-lister in her own right, and she remains so regardless of her status with Pitt, even though CDL also previously predicted she was “destined” for the “D-list” due to the breakup. Gossip Cop gives the site a big fat F for its problematic stories, like this one about Jolie being forced to quit Hollywood.
