Is Angelina Jolie furious that her Cambodian film, First They Killed My Father, wasn't nominated for an Oscar? One of this week's tabloids claims the actress is taking the snub very badly. Gossip Cop, however, can exclusively set the record straight.
Jolie's new Netflix film, which she co-wrote, produced and directed, failed to score a nod for Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Academy Awards, despite having received previous nominations at other awards shows. According to OK!, the actress is reeling over the snub, especially because Oscar recognition "would have been vindication amid the stress of her split from Brad Pitt."
A so-called "source" tells the magazine, "Angie campaigned hard for her film, hitting the awards circuit and giving interviews. She's wrecked to be out of the running. Directing means more to Angie than acting ever did. She takes her filmmaking very seriously." The supposed insider adds, "An Oscar nod would have been a triumph for her. She's absolutely devastated."
But Gossip Cop checked in with a source close to the actress and filmmaker, who dismissed the tabloid's report as "completely false." First They Killed My Father was a passion project for Jolie, not a movie she made for the sake of getting awards. The actress adopted her oldest son Maddox from Cambodia in 2002, after which she became compelled to tell the story of the country's genocide under the Khmer Rouge regime. The actress was determined to shed a light on the brutal history of the poverty-stricken country, not to collect accolades.
On the other hand, OK! does seem determined to disparage Jolie's character. Gossip Cop recently busted the tabloid for making up a story about the actress being on a diet consisting of only coffee and cigarettes. Shortly before that nonsense, we called out the publication for arbitrarily alleging that Jolie was in the midst of a "career crisis." Regardless, Jolie is very proud of her well-received Cambodian drama, and she doesn't need a gold statue to feel validated.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
