Angelina Jolie and Justin Theroux never dated, but one year ago today, a tabloid claimed the two were developing a romance. Gossip Cop debunked the report at the time. 12 months later, it's clear we were correct in our dismissal of the story.

Life & Style was responsible for the rumor. The tabloid claimed Jolie and Theroux were "starting to develop feelings for each other" after a series of sneaky dinner dates in New York City over the summer. According to the outlet, the two had initially touched base to talk about a project but soon realized there was something else going on between them.

Theroux was "charmed by her passion" for philanthropy, while Jolie fell for his "quirky sense of humor," a supposed source told the magazine. The insider even claimed the actress "cleverly orchestrated" the whole thing to spite Theroux's ex-wife Jennifer Aniston, and the "potential new love" was just a bonus. For what was supposedly "the best-kept secret," the source was surprisingly loose-lipped and claimed Jolie wasn't shy about the relationship.

As Gossip Cop pointed out at the time, the tabloid was just trying to capitalize on its previous article about Jolie "seducing" Theroux without bothering to check the facts. Theroux's spokesperson went on the record with us to clarify that the two have never gone out together, romantically or professionally. We also ran the rumor by one of our sources close to Jolie, who refuted it.

Additionally, Jolie had been between London and Los Angeles during the time the supposed dates in New York were said to have taken place. Even if the get-togethers had occurred, it would have been a miracle if neither star was photographed entering or exiting the restaurant, especially since Jolie supposedly wasn't shy about the relationship.

Twelve months later, the two still haven't actually been romantically linked. Life & Style has apparently given up on this narrative and has moved on to assigning Jolie to other actors. Just last month, the tabloid falsely reported that Jolie was causing trouble in Chris Hemsworth's marriage. It even included similar lines about an "instant connection" and digs about Jolie "stealing husbands" in reference to the situation involving Aniston and Brad Pitt.

As Gossip Cop learned earlier this year, Jolie chooses to ignore the multitude of false dating rumors surrounding her. Considering the fact that the tabloids have continuously gotten it wrong regarding her personal life, we can't blame her. Gossip Cop will continue to set the record straight when these blatantly false reports emerge.

Our Verdict

Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
