A story claiming Angelina Jolie "refuses to shy away" should she run into Jennifer Aniston at the 2018 Golden Globes was wholly fabricated. A webloid known for making up stories manufactured this faux "exclusive" after it was revealed both women are presenting at Sunday's awards show. Now Gossip Cop can debunk it.

When Gossip Cop revealed this week that HollywoodLife was our worst offender of 2017 after it ranked number one on our annual tabloid scorecard, we explained one of the site's deceptive practices. The outlet takes real news and twists it into fake news. Using a popular subject in pop culture, the online publication tries to capitalize on people's interest in that topic by concocting a related "exclusive." And that's exactly what's going on here.

On Wednesday it was revealed on Twitter that Aniston will be a presenter at the Golden Globes, and on Thursday, it was announced that Jolie will present at the ceremony, too. When a few outlets pointed out that both of Brad Pitt's wives (one ex, one estranged) will be in attendance, HollywoodLies, as it's known, started speculating, "What'll happen when Brad's exes are in the same room?" So excited was the blog, it actually declared, "Oh, this is going to be good!" The online publication also asked readers, "Do you think Jen and Angelina will have an awkward run-in at the Golden Globes?"

As if they would know. Well, to no one's surprise, HollywoodLies itself is now claiming to know what may happen if the two women come face to face. Less than six hours after its breathless wondering about what could go down, the webloid magically has a new story asserting Jolie isn't actually "worried about that potential awkward run-in." The site contends that "everyone (us included) is freaking out about a potentially awkward run-in between the two women, or even a confrontation," but fans shouldn't "count on it... at least, not on Angelina's end."

A so-called "insider" is quoted as saying, "Angelina is aware that Jennifer's going to be presenting at the Globes too." Well, duh. The stars who are signed up to participate in the ceremony are typically aware of who else is taking the stage. The outlet's almost assuredly fictional source goes on to contend that Jolie "had the option to back out but she chose not to — she doesn't feel the need to shy away from Jennifer."

"But don't expect her to make any sort of scene. The last thing she wants is some epic World War 3 with Brad's ex at the Golden Globes," contends the purported tipster. Again: Duh. Why would Jolie make a scene? Despite what the gossip media wants people to believe, there is nothing for Jolie and Aniston to have a "confrontation" over more than 10 years after Aniston and Pitt divorced and more than a year after Jolie filed to divorce him.

It's telling that this supposed "insider" is merely stating what should be obvious and it's just as telling what this "insider" isn't saying. Jolie isn't merely a presenter at Sunday's show. She's also a nominee, as Jolie's movie First They Killed My Father is nominated for Best Foreign Language film. Regardless of presenting, she would be at the ceremony to support the project's nomination and to represent it on stage should it win. That makes it even more laughable that HollywoodLies' seemingly invented source is contending Jolie might've backed out because Aniston is presenting. Why would Jolie back out of an event at which she's a nominee?

That the blog didn't even mention Jolie's nomination and acknowledge that that's her actual reason for attending the awards show indicates just how clueless HollywoodLies is. It also further demonstrates what Gossip Cop said above: This narrative was manufactured by the publication simply to exploit the news that Aniston and Jolie will both be presenters. The webloid planted the seeds with its initial story breathlessly speculating about a run-in and then suddenly had an "insider" dishing on it.

Though the methodology here is transparent, Gossip Cop still investigated as we always do. And we're told by Jolie's camp that no one in her circle discussed anything about this with HollywoodLies. It is 100 percent made-up. Don't be surprised if an equally fake news story from Aniston's perspective follows. Gossip Cop is already on high alert.

And, by the way, it's not like this is the first time the pair will both be at the same awards show. Aniston and Jolie were both at the 2015 Critics' Choice Awards without incident, as well as crossed paths back at the 2009 Oscars. The world kept turning after those events, and it will keep on turning after Sunday's Golden Globes, too.

Our Verdict

Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
