Are Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston feuding over Netflix? That's what one of the tabloids believes, and it's even alleged Aniston has the upper hand. But Gossip Cop can set the record straight.
"Jen Triumphs Over Angelina," reads a headline in the latest issue of OK!. The article begins, "Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie's feud has been reignited — only this time, it isn't over a man." It's alleged that with Aniston "currently filming Murder Mystery and set to star in First Ladies" for Netflix, she has "become the streaming service's new golden girl." And, as a result, her "longtime rival" supposedly "isn't happy."
A so-called "insider" is quoted as saying, "The view among bosses at Netflix is that Jen's their next big star. They're prepared to pay her handsomely to fast-track shooting on both projects and also make a bunch of other movies with [Netflix]." Apparently this "insider" isn't actually on the inside, because he or she doesn't seem to know that Murder Mystery already wrapped filming this week, as co-star Adam Sandler posted on Twitter. It also makes little sense to claim Netflix sees the actress as "their next big star" considering the biggest project Aniston has coming up is a full-on series for Apple, which will shoot this fall.
Still, the magazine describes Jolie as "extremely irked," because she was Netflix's "original darling" with her film, First They Killed My Father. "She's playing second fiddle to Jen and she's furious over it," contends the questionable source. The outlet's purported tipster goes on to assert, "Jen has more clout in Hollywood — and makes it look easy. It's the ultimate slap in the face."
It was actually the publication's sister site, RadarOnline, that first claimed a few days ago that Jolie is jealous of Aniston's "rising Netflix success." That article featured suspiciously similar quotes, such as, "It's really irked Angelina, who thought she was the Netflix darling after 'First They Killed My Father,' but now she's playing second fiddle to Jen and she's [angry] as hell over it." It was also said in that piece that Aniston's work with the streamer "shows that she has more clout in Hollywood when it comes to this stuff."
As Gossip Cop pointed out then, Jolie isn't hurting for projects. She currently has three movies in production — Maleficent 2, Come Away and The One And Only Ivan — and two of those films are with Disney, which is one of the most powerful studios in Hollywood. Of course, none of that was mentioned by Radar, and none of it is acknowledged in the OK! story, either.
And in addition to the outlets omitting key facts, it's simply ridiculous to claim Jolie is "second fiddle" to Aniston at Netflix just because the "Friends" star has two comedy films in the works with the content provider. Anyone familiar with Jolie's career would agree that comedy movies aren't her forte, and Netflix's full lineup of original films shows that it covers a variety of genres and employs dozens of different stars. In other words, Aniston isn't taking projects away from Jolie, and there is more than enough to go around for both of them.
But the gossip media likes pitting Brad Pitt's exes against each other whenever possible. In February, for example, OK! wanted readers to believe that "a face-to-face showdown" between Jolie and Aniston at the Oscars was "inevitable." As is now abundantly clear, the awards show took place without incident. In fact, neither even attended the ceremony, with Aniston only going to host Jimmy Kimmel's after-party. If the tabloid doesn't get better "insiders," it's going to keep feuding with the facts like this.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
