Angelina Jolie‘s health has not derailed her career, despite a report. One year ago today, Gossip Cop debunked a tabloid story that claimed Bell’s palsy may end her professional life. There is plenty of evidence that hasn’t happened, just as we rightly said it wasn’t.
On September 7, 2017, we busted the National Enquirer for falsely claiming Jolie was suffering from a “new health crisis” that she only just “learned” about. This was a lie. Jolie discussed her Bell’s palsy diagnosis in the September issue of Vanity Fair, which was released online on July 26, 2017. In the article, it was revealed that she suffered from the medical ailment, which causes the face to droop, in 2016, but made a “full recovery.” So this was neither a “new” health crisis, nor an ongoing one.
But the Enquirer wanted readers to believe otherwise. “Angie’s terrified this could end her career,” a so-called “source” was quoted as saying. This unidentifiable insider went on to contend, “She built her empire on playing a gorgeous leading lady, and as brutal as it is, those roles will dry up if her beautiful face is changed in any way.” Of course, the pictures that accompanied the Vanity Fair cover story were proof that her “beautiful face” hadn’t actually “changed” permanently at all.
As Gossip Cop explained then, Jolie only had the facial paralysis temporarily, but was long back to normal by the time her illness became public. This take from the outlet was pure sensationalism that was easily disproven. But the passage of time now serves as additional proof that the publication was wrong. Following this September 2017 story, the actress-director was a frequent fixture throughout awards season. Jolie appeared at the Hollywood Film Awards in November, for example, and at the Golden Globes with son Pax by her side in January. She spoke at both events as well, yet at no point were there any apparent problems with her face.
It is also clear her career is continuing without issue. Jolie spent the summer shooting Maleficent 2, and Come Away with Jolie has already begun production that will continue this fall. So has her health derailed her professional life? It quite obviously hasn’t, and it was ridiculous to even claim that Jolie was worried that Bell’s palsy would end her career given that this particular ailment was already resolved before the story was manufactured.
Of course, this is a tabloid that often appears desperate to make it seem like the star is in dire straits. That was the case just two months ago, when the magazine made-up a story about Jolie supposedly “collapsing” amid her custody battle with Brad Pitt. To sell that narrative, the outlet used a decade-old photo of the actress actually performing a movie stunt. The publication seems to like taking things out of context and twisting them, but Gossip Cop will keep separating fact from fiction as necessary. Jolie is pictured above at the Critics’ Choice Awards in January 2018. Fans can see for themselves that there was no issue with her facial appearance.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
