Angelina Jolie is on a "hunger strike" in the midst of her custody struggles? That's the obnoxious rumor from one tabloid this week. Gossip Cop found it to be as fake as it is insulting.
"Stressed Angie Goes On Hunger Strike," shouts the latest issue of New Idea. According to the tabloid, Jolie "was spotted looking frail" while out and about with her kids. The outlet's "sources" claim that beneath the shopping bags and smiles is a woman "stressed to the max" by "custody talks" with ex-husband Brad Pitt.
In fact, the anonymous tipsters say, she's so worried about the custody situation that it's destroying her appetite. "She's barely 100lbs right now, and nobody around her can remember the last time she ate a full meal," a unidentifiable source tells the magazine.
"Angie's made no secret of how she wants to live abroad but Brad's put his foot down and there's nothing she can do about it," the source adds. "That's led to this lifestyle of rushing every other week from Europe to LA, shuttling the kids around when she's not working and stretching herself to the limit."
"Food's the last thing on her mind and she's getting by on just fruit, the occasional bite of protein and gallons of coffee to keep her energy levels up," the insider concludes. Nowhere does the tabloid mention a hunger strike or anything similar outside of its desperate headline. A hunger strike is a purposeful action — forgetting to eat doesn't quite count.
The reason the whole narrative seems familiar is because we busted NW for the exact same story this past October. Both stories force the "hunger strike amidst custody battle with Pitt" aspect in to trick readers into picking up a copy of the magazine, but neither really explains the idea beyond the headline. The two main problems in this latest piece are the misunderstanding about the Pitt-Jolie custody agreement and the accusations about Jolie's health.
As we've explained before, Angelina Jolie mentioned in a past interview that she would, in fact, like to move abroad. The second half of that quote, however, specifies that she's not going anywhere since the kids need to be close to their father stateside. Until the children are all 18, she needs to allow Pitt a certain amount of time with his kids. There's no fluctuation or changes in that fact that would stress her out to the point of a health crisis.
After all, this is the same outlet that argued that Maddox Jolie-Pitt would take custody of the rest of his siblings last July. The tabloid clearly doesn't care about the reality of the members of the Jolie-Pitt family. It seems to favor anonymous "insiders" over court documents.
New Idea also seems to favor recycled details regarding a leading woman's appearance and diet. Gossip Cop is very familiar with the claim that an actress is living solely on a diet of coffee and "the occasional piece of fruit." It's nearly exactly what OK! wrote about Jolie in January 2018. The tabloid argued that the star's diet was limited to grapefruit, strawberries and coffee. Considering that Angelina Jolie hasn't collapsed due to severe malnutrition in the years of these claims, we think it's safe to say that she's eating just fine.
Our sources in Jolie's camp have told us, multiple times, that the rumors about her health and custody struggles are false. We're going to dismiss this latest piece as well. For what it's worth, we did sort through the latest photos of the Maleficent star. We could find no frailty or cause for concern. Once again, the tabloids are wickedly wrong.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
