Angelina Jolie did not say her cancer scares led to her split from Brad Pitt, despite a claim. This report twists a recent interview to wrongly make it seem like her health issues caused the couple's breakup. Gossip Cop can confirm they did not.
The Inquirer (not to be confused with the National Enquirer or The Inquisitr) writes on its site on Friday, "Much has been said about the possible reasons behind the split between seemingly perfect Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Earlier reports cited infidelity and alcohol abuse on Pitt's part, but the pair has relatively been silent on what really caused the rift in their two years of marriage." Actually, no reliable reports "cited infidelity." In fact, they noted there was no affair to blame for the divorce.
Neither Pitt nor Jolie was unfaithful and no third party played a role in their separation. In actuality, Jolie chose to file for divorce after a drunken Pitt got into an argument with their son Maddox aboard a plane. That was the catalyst. Not infidelity and not the actress' health problems. But because Jolie recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about a range of issues, including her medical crisis, this outlet is wrongly blaming the divorce on her health battle, claiming, "Jolie candidly revealed that her health problems did in fact put pressure on their relationship."
That's not an accurate reflection of what Jolie said or the context in which she said it. She was actually speaking about By The Sea and the difficulties she went through personally before and during her work on the film. She explained, "I had my mastectomy right before I shot Unbroken, in fact. Just over the span of that decade, I did lose my mother, I did have my mastectomy, and I did then have an ovarian cancer scare and have that surgery as well, and other things, of course, that happen in life that you go through... A piece of art can be something that's healing or it can just something be difficult."
Nowhere did Jolie say that her mastectomy or ovarian cancer scare led her to leave Pitt. The publication is extrapolating one part of the interview and not representing it correctly. It is true that Jolie admitted in the chat to difficulties in their marriage, but the reason she filed for divorce was and remains the fight on the plane.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
