Did Angelina Jolie reject a divorce deal from Brad Pitt because she wanted instead to reconcile with him? That was a claim made exactly one year ago today by one of the tabloids. At the time, Gossip Cop said it was untrue, and now 12 months later it’s even clearer how false the magazine’s premise was.

On December 10, 2017, Life & Style published an article that maintained Pitt was willing to offer Jolie up to $100 million to settle their divorce, and she still said no. The outlet alleged the “deadlock” wasn’t because she was looking for more money, but rather because the Oscar-winning actress really wanted to get back together with Pitt. The tabloid even contended it had an “insider” who asserted Pitt was willing to hand over “huge” amounts of money to get “Angie to sign off on the divorce,” but Jolie “rejected every single offer” and, as a result, the actor “doesn’t trust Angelina anymore.”

Of course, Gossip Cop was right not to trust the magazine, which has published several verifiably wrong claims about the estranged spouses both before and since that article. When the tabloid first floated its false narrative about Jolie turning down an alleged offer from Pitt of $100 million to settle their divorce because she wanted to reunite with him, a confidante of the actor told us it was “completely false.” Now 365 days later, there should be no doubt the tabloid either fabricated its story or relied entirely on untrustworthy sources.

As we noted a year ago, the first tipoff for readers the story was bogus was how its alleged “source” alternated between referring to Jolie as “Angie” and “Angelina.” A real-life person would not call someone they know by two different versions of their name. But more significantly, Jolie was the one who filed for divorce from Pitt following an incident with their son Maddox on a private plane in September 2016, and there was never any indication she changed her mind about wanting to split from her husband. Additionally, far from wanting to reconcile, in an August court filing in which she alleged her estranged husband hadn’t provided “meaningful” child support, Jolie stated she wanted to her divorce from Pitt finalized by the end of the year.

It bears mentioning Life & Style doesn’t have a good track record with its Brangelina stories. For instance, the tabloid inaccurately contended in May 2017 Pitt and Jolie were “back together again” and “secretly dating.” Nor has the outlet’s reporting gotten any better in the intervening months since it wrongly maintained Pitt offered Jolie $100 million to settle their divorce.

Arguably, the magazine’s articles seem to be even more outrageous. In March 2018, Gossip Cop busted the outlet when it published a fictitious cover story about Jolie getting married to husband number four. As we pointed out back then, Jolie was never engaged to an unnamed and unidentifiable “millionaire British philanthropist,” and no legitimate outlet has backed up that outrageous claim.

Four months after that nonsense, the tabloid again switched courses and inaccurately asserted Pitt’s parents were urging him to marry Jennifer Aniston again. But, as Gossip Cop has rightly pointed out for a couple of years now, the ex spouses haven’t even seen each other in years. And just a little more than a month ago, Gossip Cop nailed the magazine when it untruthfully and bizarrely maintained on its cover that Jolie was dating Justin Theroux.

As we’ve mentioned in the past, Gossip Cop sometimes revisits stories from exactly one year before to help visitors assess which outlets to trust. Based on how many unquestionable untrue articles the tabloid have published, it appears the magazine’s purported Pitt and Jolie sources have little to no insight whatsoever into their lives. But if you want the facts, and nothing but the facts about Brangelina, there’s only one Gossip Cop.
