Are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt trying to prove they've "moved on" from each other? That was the claim from one of the celebrity magazines exactly one year ago today. Gossip Cop debunked the story back then about them dating other people, and now 12 months later there's no question the publication's premise couldn't have been more inaccurate.
On April 8, 2018, Closer reported the divorcing stars were "determined" to show the other that they had "moved on." In fact, the outlet maintained Jolie already had a "new boyfriend," a nameless real estate agent who was only described as "older" and "handsome." The tabloid further contended the actress was looking forward to "show[ing] the world she's in a happy, settled place."
When it came to Pitt, the magazine asserted the actor was looking to his friends to "set him up," but not with anyone famous. The publication also mentioned how Pitt had been spending time with MIT professor Neri Oxman. Also to lend credence to its piece, an anonymous source was quoted as saying Jolie and Pitt were in a "race" to find love before the other.
At the time the magazine published its article, Gossip Cop was assured by Pitt's rep that he was not romantically involved with Oxman. As for Jolie, we noted last year it was hard to believe the outlet's tale about her "boyfriend" when it had absolutely no details whatsoever about his name, how the two met, or what he looked like. Also, Gossip Cop was assured by a trusted Jolie confidante that the tabloid's story was "not true," and that she wasn't interested in dating and was instead focused solely on her kids and career.
Now that 365 days have passed, it's obvious Jolie wasn't dating a "handsome" real estate agent or anyone else, and contrary to the publication's claim, she hasn't "show[ed] the world" she's in a "settled place" with a new man. And despite a slew of outlets linking Pitt romantically to the MIT professor, Oxman herself later confirmed in a New York Times interview that she and the movie star never dated. Actually, over the course of the past year, it's clear Pitt and Jolie were not in a "race" to find love again. The two estranged spouses have been concentrating on their divorce and the custody battle over their six kids, and not on trying to prove to the other that they've "moved on."
Still, both of the estranged spouses have been wrongly rumored to be dating a number of other people. Just last month, for example, Gossip Cop busted one of the tabloids for absurdly alleging Pitt got dumped by Charlize Theron for "two-timing" her with Jennifer Aniston. Of course, he hasn't been romantically involved with his ex-wife for close to a decade and half and he never dated the South African actress. And Jolie has been falsely reported to be dating Keanu Reeves, as well as Sean Penn, Justin Theroux, and Jared Leto.
As we've stated before, from time to time Gossip Cop looks back at articles from a year before to help readers assess which magazines they can and cannot trust, and to remind them to sometimes be skeptical about what they're reading elsewhere about their favorite celebrities. Far too often the tabloids and entertainment blogs publish works of fiction. Gossip Cop, however, doesn't post anything until we've gathered all the facts. As a result, it's why we're often cited by other outlets for being a trusted source of information.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
