Zooey Deschanel: Not Every Woman Is “Dying To Give Birth”!

Zooey Deschanel hates being asked if she wants to have kids.
“When I was married, that was the first thing people wanted to know,” says the “New Girl” star.
“Like every woman is dying to give birth!” Deschanel adds in the August issue of InStyle. “I don’t think so.”
She notes, “Nobody asks a guy that. And you go into a supermarket and every tabloid is like, ‘Pregnant and Alone!’ Stuck in this 1950s ideal of how a woman should live her life. That’s not something that defines me at all.’”
Deschanel and her ex-husband, Death Cab for Cutie rocker Ben Gibbard, divorced in 2012 after nearly three years together.
Her new relationship with screenwriter Jamie Linden is another topic she’d rather not discuss.
“You have to be careful what you reveal,” says Deschanel. “You invite people in and can’t kick them out.”
The actress tries to keep a sense of normalcy in her life, despite her fame.
“I’ve seen a lot of people turn — sometimes it unlocks who they really are,” she says. “They turn into celebrities who are separate from themselves.”
“That’s OK, but I just don’t want to be like that. I have to be normal. My mother wouldn’t let me be any other way,” explains Deschanel.
A budding designer, who teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger to create a capsule collection, also says she hates “that fashion could be something that excludes people.”
Deschanel is not ruled by designer labels, although she knows some actresses are.
“I remember I was wearing a cute jacket, and I saw this well-known actress — who will remain nameless — with her stylist,” she recalls. They said, “‘Oh my god, that’s so cute. Where did you get it?’ I told them, and it was not a fancy brand, and they were like, ‘Oh.’”
“I just thought, ‘Do you not like it anymore because of the brand?’ That’s so dumb,” says Deschanel. “And you have just made yourself into a cartoon villain.”
