Cecil The Lion: Zimbabwe Wants U.S. To Extradite Dentist Walter James Palmer
Cecil the lion’s killer Walter James Palmer could get extradited to Zimbabwe, if the Southern African country gets its way. Zimbabwe is asking U.S. officials to send the Minnesota dentist back so that he may be possibly prosecuted for Cecil’s murder. As Gossip Cop reported, Palmer was named as one of three people who hunted and killed the famed cat on July 1.
Zimbabwe’s environment, water and climate minister Oppah Muchinguri said, “Unfortunately it was too late to apprehend the foreign poacher as he had already absconded to his country of origin.” He added, “We are appealing to the responsible authorities for his extradition to Zimbabwe so that he be made accountable.”
Part of the problem with Zimbabwe’s request is that even U.S officials can’t find Palmer. It’s believed the dentist went into hiding earlier this week after releasing a statement on Tuesday apologizing for killing Cecil. Investigators have visited Palmer’s home and his dentist office, but have not been able to locate him. They’ve also tried contacting Palmer through email and phone numbers.
As Gossip Cop previously reported, it’s believed Palmer paid two local hunters $50,000 to help him hunt the lion. The men allegedly lured Cecil outside the Hwange National Park with food, and then shot him with bows. The injured lion escaped, but Palmer and his guides tracked the lion for 40 hours before shooting him to death. In Palmer’s apology, he said he did not know Cecil was famous and being used for study. The dentist also maintained that he thought the hunt was legal. Do you think the U.S. should extradite Palmer to Zimbabwe?
