Zendaya Joins ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot In Mystery Role
Zendaya has been cast in a major role in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, it was announced on Monday. The actress and singer joins previously announced cast members Tom Holland, who will star as Peter Parker (Spider-Man), and Marisa Tomei, who will play Aunt May.
Zendaya’s character remains a mystery at this time, but her name is in the film is reportedly Michelle. She’s not expected to play the title character’s love interest, however, as Parker’s comic book romances were with Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy, played by Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone in earlier incarnations of the franchise. Zendaya is best known for her role on the Disney Channel series “Shake It Up” and her self-titled album, which featured the hit single “Replay.”
Holland, a 19-year-old British actor, nabbed the lead role in the film last June, beating out hundreds of other candidates who auditioned to play the superhero character. Holland will be the third actor to portray the web-slinger on the big screen, following turns by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
The upcoming Spider-Man reboot, which doesn’t have an official title yet, swings into theaters on July 7, 2017. However, Holland will first debut his character in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War.
