Zayn Malik’s “Pillow Talk” Debuts At Number One On UK Top 40 Chart
Zayn Malik’s “Pillow Talk” debuted at number one on the UK Top 40 singles chart on Friday, marking his first huge milestone as a solo artist.
As Gossip Cop reported, Malik dropped “Pillow Talk” as his first solo single last Friday at midnight. Now one week later, the track has racked up 112,000 sales, with 4.97 million streams. The song is now the fasting-selling of 2016 so far.
In taking the top spot, Malik pushed out Shawn Mendes and “Stitches,” which had dethroned Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” last week. The British star commented on the good news by retweeting the announcement with a sunglasses-wearing emoji. On Wednesday, he released an acoustic version of “Pillow Talk” recorded in a so-called “living room session.”
Of course, Malik is no stranger to having a number one song. With One Direction, the group’s very first single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” debuted atop the UK chart back in 2011, which “Little Things” did as well the following year. “One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)” then entered the Top 40 at number one in 2013. Last summer, “Drag Me Down” became the band’s fourth number one, but the first without Malik.
As for the Billboard Hot 100 chart here in the U.S., One Direction has yet to score a number one song. Could Malik do it first? Currently “Pillow Talk” is projected to definitely make the top five… and could potentially steal the top spot from Bieber or Drake, who has his own new song. The official numbers will be in on Monday, so stay tuned!
