Zayn Malik: I Never Wanted To Be In One Direction (VIDEO)
Zayn Malik reveals in a candid new interview that he “never really wanted to be” in One Direction, and explains why he was always eager to leave the boy band and embark on a solo career. See the video below.
On Thursday, “Beats 1 Radio” will air an interview that Malik did with Zane Lowe, but a teaser from their discussion has already been released online. The singer is currently promoting his first solo single “Pillowtalk,” but Lowe naturally asks Malik about his infamous split from One Direction.
“I always kind of wanted to go,” admits Malik. “From, like, the first year really.” The singer adds, “I never really wanted to be there, in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time.” As for why he felt out of place, Malik says, “I couldn’t give my opinion because it didn’t fit the grain of what we were as a band, and what we represented.”
Lowe also asks Malik if his former band members were aware that he wanted out from the very beginning. The singer reveals, “I think the boys kind of knew, in terms of the music, that wasn’t my cup of tea. They were aware of that.” Malik also notes that none of the other One Direction guys tried to dissuade him from quitting. “They obviously didn’t want me to leave,” he says. “But they couldn’t talk me out of it at that point. I had already made my mind up, so I just left.”
Malik’s full interview on “Beats 1 Radio” will air on Thursday, but in the meantime, watch a clip below.
