Zayn Malik Breaks Silence In First Interview: Quitting One Direction Was “Crazy” But I “Feel Good” And “In Control”
Zayn Malik has broken his silence since quitting One Direction. He said of his decision to leave the band, “It is crazy and wild and a bit mad, but at the same time I’ve never felt more in control in my life.” He added, “I feel like I’m doing what’s right — right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good.”
Malik talked to the British tabloid The Sun hours after announcing he had left One Direction, touching on a number of rumors about his relationship with bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson, as well as with his fiancee, Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards. As for talk of any ill-will between him and the other boys, Malik emphatically stated that it “couldn’t be more wrong.” He also stressed that they’ve “been cool” about his decision to leave. And Edwards? Malik noted she’s been nothing but “very supportive.”
The British singer made clear that it was hardly a rash decision to quit, and throughout the process he thought of his fans. “I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of other people’s happiness,” said Malik. “And that was mainly for the fans. I only ever tried to do it for the fans,” continued Malik, who felt, “I may have let them down in some sort of way.”
Of the the fans, Malik went on to say, “It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not real to me.” But he did quell fans’ fears about the band breaking up. Malik told the paper, “They still want to do it for a while, they’ll carry on doing what they want to do.”
Interestingly, even though Malik claimed he wants to live “out of the spotlight,” and being in a world-famous band didn’t feel “real” for him, he gave the interview from inside a recording studio, where he’s working on a new album. Malik cautioned that he’s not rushing to release anything right now. He said, “I’m just going to chill man. I’m just going to be me for a while.” What do you think about Malik’s first interview since quitting One Direction?
