ABC Cancels Controversial Work It

Truth rating: 10

(ABC)

ABC has canceled its cross-dressing comedy “Work It” after two episodes, dismal ratings and controversy.

The sitcom, about two men who pose as women to get hired during the recession, premiered to an avalanche of negative critical attention – but not many viewers.

Advocacy groups including the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) had blasted ABC for “Work It,” claiming that it did damage to the transgender community by enforcing negative stereotypes.

Before ratings plummeted even further for its second (and, ultimately, final) episode, “Work It” was defended by ABC Entertainment chief Paul Lee, who told reporters he “didn’t really get” the outrage over the series.

Repeats of “Last Man Standing,” starring Tim Allen, will air in its place for the time being.

I watched it. It had a few laughs in it. Does this mean Cougartown will come back, now?

This show was okay, but I’m not sorry to see it go.

Funny how times have changed.Tom Hanks might not have a career, if it weren’t for a show with a similar theme…”Bosom Buddies” in which he and Peter Scolari played friends and roommates who dressed as women to have a place to live and work..the year….1980. The series also starred the future Mrs. Dan Aykroyd: Donna Dixon as their lust interest….

I was going to post the same thing! Funny, I thought society was progressing…

I think I read that Cougar Town is coming back in March. No specific date has been chosen yet.

I can’t imagine any TV show being canned for being “controversial”. It has to be about the ratings and now the networks don’t even give new shows a chance to catch an audience. People watch TV differently with DVR and “On Demand”. I rarely watch live TV because I am so busy until 9 or 10PM. I assume there have been a lot of good shows that I have missed because I don’t catch them in time. The networks should rethink their strategies to keep in tune with technology.

As a result of their speed to cancel programs, we generally wait until a show has completed a season and will watch that season on DVD or Netflix right before the second season premieres. Otherwise, we get involved and the show vanishes.

Controversy sells. This show was just plain terrible.

In order to generate controversy isn’t it necessary for more than 3 people to be aware the show exists?

Mrs. Doubtfire was also a movie I remember from my childhood. I think people are just getting a little too sensitive. I never watched the show because it didn’t look interesting to me but all of these advocacy groups seem to be taking things that are Entertainment too seriously and need to lighten up!
