Woody Allen: Miley Cyrus Is “Really A Talented Girl”
It was announced in January that Cyrus will star alongside Allen in an upcoming Amazon series, which will consist of six half-hour episodes. The comedy, which is set in the 1960s, is still untitled, but filming has already wrapped. Now, in a new cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, the famed writer-director sings Cyrus’ praises.
Allen reveals he didn’t meet Cyrus until they embarked on this project together, but he’s actually been a longtime fan. “I noticed years ago that my kids would be watching ‘Hannah Montana.’ And I would say: ‘Who is that girl? She’s got such a good delivery. You know, she snaps those lines off so well. The show is a silly little show, but she’s very good at what she does,'” he recalls.
The filmmaker goes on, “And then she emerged as a singer, and someone showed me a little clip of hers from ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and I said, ‘It confirms what I always thought about her: She is very good, she is really a talented girl.'” The two finally came face to face in Allen’s screening room, where they discussed working together.
“She wanted to take some time off, but she [agreed to do the series] because the role interested her. So I met her right here,” Allen tells the magazine. “She came in here one day while the casting people were here. She came in and we chatted for a few minutes — a perfunctory chat, just getting to know the person.”
He adds, “But I wanted to hire her. I didn’t need that five minutes of silly chat.” Unfortunately, though, the partnership may be short-lived as Allen doesn’t plan on making additional episodes for their new series. A release has also not yet been announced.
