WikiLeaks: Anna Nicole Smith Destroyed the Bahamas’ Government
5:00 pm, December 22nd, 2010
Anna Nicole Smith played a role in toppling the government in the Bahamas, according to U.S. diplomatic cables exposed by WikiLeaks.
The confidential documents describe how the former Playboy model’s application for legal residency in the Bahamas led to allegations that the Minister of Immigration had been bribed, while the poor handling of her son’s hospitalization and death on the islands sparked talk of cover-ups among other officials.
The atmosphere of controversy was credited with helping to weaken the incumbent Progressive Labor Party.
The opposition Free National Movement “has used these scandals to seize the offensive in the run-up to elections,” reads the last Smith-related cable, dated March 2007 and believed to have been written by diplomat Brent Hardt.
Two months later, the Progressive Labor Party lost in elections.
Previous cables from Hardt detailed the controversies Smith created for local officials.
“Not since Category 4 Hurricane Betsy made landfall in 1965 has one woman done as much damage in Nassau,” reads a passage from November 2006.
“Lying in disarray in her wake are Doctor’s Hospital, the Coroner’s Court, the Department of Immigration, local mega-lawyers Callenders and Co., formerly popular Minister of Immigration Shane Gibson, and possibly Prime Minister Christie’s PLP government.”
A local newspaper published photographs of Gibson and Smith embracing, forcing Gibson to resign in February 2007.
“The Anna Nicole scandal has recast Gibson as puppet of the privileged rather than defender of the common people of The Bahamas,” wrote the diplomat.
Smith died on February 8, 2007.
Three months later, the government fell.
