Whoopi Goldberg: I’m NOT Boycotting Oscars — But “It Pisses Me Off” (VIDEO)
Whoopi Goldberg says she will NOT boycott the Oscars over the racial diversity controversy, but plans to “bitch” about it all year because it “pisses” her off. Watch below.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The View,” one of the Hot Topics centered around the lack of black nominees for the 2016 Academy Awards, and Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith’s decision to boycott the upcoming ceremony. This marks the second year in a row that only white actors were nominated, and the Academy president has vowed to make changes going forward. Now Goldberg, an Oscar winner herself, is giving her unvarnished take.
“Here’s my question: Why is this a conversation we only have once a year?” asked “The View” moderator. “Because every year we get all fired up, and the rest of the year nobody says anything.”
After some back-and-forth with her co-hosts, Goldberg stated, “Chris Rock is the host of the Academy Awards, so to boycott him just seems as bad as what everybody’s saying. We have this conversation every year and it pisses me off because there are people — there’s not a lot of support for little companies who make movies that may be more diverse than anything else. You can’t just look at it on Oscar time.”
“I am mad,” the EGOT winner went on to insist, warning viewers not to bother writing here hate mail. She then disagreed with guest co-host Sunny Hostin about whether the racial makeup of the Academey is to blame. “No, no, no,” an increasingly angry Goldberg shouted. “I make movies for a living. Let me tell you what the problem is.”
She continued, “It’s not that the people nominating are too white. They’re not looking at a movie and saying, ‘Oh, that’s very white. I’m not going to nominate that black movie.’ They’re not sitting there like that. The problem is the people who can be helping to make movies that have blacks and Latinos and women and all that, that money doesn’t come to you because the idea is that there’s no place for black movies.”
Goldberg, noting that there’s a belief that people don’t want to “see movies with black people in them,” later added, “Until you start making movies like The Avengers where you see more than 70 white folks saving the Earth — and I am mad about this. Wanna know why? Because I would like to be one of those people saving the Earth. But they’re not coming to me!”
Towards the end of the segment, the actress-comedienne argued, “You make a stink all year. All year. Boycotting doesn’t work. And it’s also a slap in the face of Chris Rock, and I find that also wrong. So I’m not going to boycott, but I’m going to continue to bitch as I have all year round because I’m tired of seeing movies where no one is represented except a bit of the population.” Check out the full segment below.
