Whoopi Goldberg, Jedediah Bila Fight Over Planned Parenthood On ‘The View’ (VIDEO)
Whoopi Goldberg and Jedediah Bila had an intense fight on “The View” on Friday over the GOP’s plans to defund Planned Parenthood. Check out the video below.
On Wednesday, a House panel delivered a congressional report criticizing Planned Parenthood, and on Thursday, Paul Ryan vowed to stop giving federal funds to the organization. The Speaker of the House said such legislation will be part of efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Stars are already objecting to the plans, and now so are some of “The View” panelists.
Goldberg kicked off an eight-minute discussion on the subject during the week-ending episode by asking, “Do people still not have their facts straight about who’s actually going to be affected by Planned Parenthood’s removal?” She then rattled off some facts about how the funding is tied to Medicaid.
And after Joy Behar pointed out that critics remain upset even thought no tax dollars go to funding abortions, Goldberg stated, “Can we just say that again? Because the myth of federal taxes paying for abortions has been discredited. We’ve said it a million times.”
“Let’s be realistic,” Goldberg went on to say. “The only people who are going to eat it when Planned Parenthood goes away are women who need the services.” Sara Haines then noted, “I think often time Planned Parenthood is seen as synonymous with abortion, and what people don’t realize is that the majority — 75 percent of their [federal funds] goes to Medicaid reimbursements.”
Both agreed that those being “[hung] out to dry” are women and “the poorest among us.” Haines argued, “If you’re taking a religious stance on this, you have to weigh the lesser of evils. Is that small percentage bigger than leaving people out that don’t have help, that don’t have money or services to help them?”
The dissenting opinion came from Bila, who stressed that the issue is not about “whether Planned Parenthood has a right to exist,” but “whether Planned Parenthood has a right to taxpayer money.” She pointed out, “Just because that money doesn’t directly go into abortion, you’re talking abut an organization that gets one-third of its clinic income from abortion.”
Tension then increased when Goldberg and Bila clashed over whether this was a religious issue. The moderator tried comparing the tax dollars aspect to being forced to fund the Mexican border wall that she doesn’t want to pay for, which Bila thought was a “different” situation. After they engaged in a heated back-and-forth, Behar interjected to say that President-elect Trump won’t be paying for either since he “doesn’t pay taxes period.”
That at least got some laughs, but the light-hearted moment didn’t last. When Bila ratcheted back up again, Goldberg exclaimed, “I can’t sit and do this anymore. I can’t do it.” Watch the full video below.
